Thanks for all the votes and comments.
This is more of a candid than an outtake, the original is here: //www.dpchallenge.com/portfolio_edit.php?IMAGE_ID=278862
As some have suggested the boy (my wife's grandson) was bored of having pictures taken. His sister was miserable because she thought her ears looked too big in the pictures she'd seen already.
I was originally going to crop the pic so that everyone's hands were in the frame, but it looked too busy across the bottom.
I didn't give the picture a title to see what others thought without any suggestion from me, which seems o have worked as there are some varied comments.

A very nice b/w character study. Bumping up.

I love portraits where they are clearly looking at each other and not the camera. This is nice and I can see moms frustration. Nice capture.

I like the title. ;) Nice natural pose. Brother looks soft in focus, sister looks overexposed. Mom looks just right.

Mmmm. Congratulations, this is really really good. Everyone's expressions are interesting and sincere. No cheesy stuff (thank goodness). I would possibly have cropped just on his left ear to bring mom to the thirds line and looking into the image. Nevertheless, a high score from me.

I like the way every one is looking some place different. Black and white is really very nice.

no eye contact from anyone in the picture, and some unhappy faces as well. the picture is a little depressing. apart from that, lighting and sharpness is nice

How odd that everyone looks rather sad and pensive in this photo. I like the composition quite a bit---a very classic triangle. I like the simplicity of the background.

The exposure seems a bit fuzzy around the boy, as if the shutter wasn't fast enough to capture a bit of wiggling. The skin tone on the boy and girl are a bit blown out.

It bothers me that mom's arm is not around the daughter. There is a wierd distance created visually between the mom and the daughter due to the black clothing blending in with the black background and an emotional distance created by the daughter's sad expression. The mother looks a bit irritated, her lips look rather pressed together. I'm only mentioning this because in evaluating this challenge I feel the emotional content is of equal importance to the technical content. I'm sure this is a very happy family. Not knowing the subjects I can only evaluate the photo.

I'm guessing the tension I'm seeing in this shot is just a reflection of the subjects' growing impatience with the photographic process.

A very quiet and thoughtful moment, like this very much

Why is everyone so sad?
01/02/2006 02:07:35 AM
wow. i'm really intrigued by this image. so much can be read into it and i think you made a great decision to leave it unnamed. i think i would have preferred mom to be wearing a lighter color too, to prevent her head from looking like it's floating.

Minus 5 points for no title.

...heeheehee - just kidding. Technically nice photo, but the composition and expressions don't portray any closeness - only distance and it appears that none of them wanted to be there. When the challenge is over, post the following frames where the boy is flipping you off. ;-) LOL Just kiddin.

I don't get the title .. but is a lovely photo ... I like the B&W .. for this one is definately not overkill ... I also like the capture of the expressions.
