I was trying to capture this exact shot last weekend, but had trouble with sunlight. Looks awesome.

Yes, it reminds me of the Baraka scene too... where the people travelling through a train station are compared to chickens in a batch line

Congratulations!!!!!! Exellent pix!!!!

thank you all for the great comments and scores! I'm almost glad I didn't win - there wouldn't be much chance of improvement that way ;-) actually, it's probably all down from here anyway...
I took the shot during a nice dinner at Metrazur, the restaurant on the East Balcony. It's a truly splendid way to combine a hobby with a "buzzing meal". For those of you who've never been to NYC, GCT is definitely a place to go when you do get here, dinner of course optional. This terminal's cathedral-like hall, the buzz and mumbling of the crowd (I'd say it doesn't even get loud during rush hour), the light, the masses pouring out into the hall from arriving commuter trains - simply beautiful.
The picture was taken using the ballustrade as a tripod substitute, which might explain the little tilt and the camera was set to automatic, no flash of course. My camera doesn't have any manual settings apart from white balance and exposure correction and I measured the light in different places till I got the picture I wanted instead of playing with exposure bias values.

It's all FEAR from here... good luck everyone!

Bruno, congrats on second place :) Good shot !

This is great! Maybe the only thing I would change would be to have lowered the point of view just a little to eliminate the line on the top right and to include the feet of the feet of the people in the foreground. I would probably have to see it to know for sure.

Great photo. I like the lthe way your exposure shows the motion of the people.
06/30/2002 09:21:00 PM
I like the movement in this shot. Good work.
06/30/2002 05:12:00 PM
good time exposure

i really liket his shot.. the combination of motion and stillness. very nice.
06/29/2002 03:13:00 PM
I like the contrast between the people heading to their destinations vs the people that are waiting. This photo shows exactly what's going on there at that time.

GCT has is so rich with photographic possibility. I don't think you captured the best it has to offer. I like the blurred images inthe mid- and background. sjgleah 4

Is this "Central Station"? Nice motion blur and exposure balance, was this automatic or set? One of my top picks for this week.
06/27/2002 01:10:00 PM
the motion and lighting of this shot makes it so powerfull...
06/27/2002 10:10:00 AM
Awesome! Exactly the kind of thing I wanted to do, but couldn't accomplish. Good for you. Nice composition, lighting, motion, story telling. Can't wait to see the settings you used.
06/26/2002 11:30:00 PM
Outstanding work. I love how some people seem still while others are blurred. A great candidate for a "how did you do that?"
06/26/2002 11:26:00 PM
I hope this wins. The motion and stillness of this photo is incredible...the sharpness of every detail is wonderful. I hope this wins this week because I think it's perfect!!!
06/26/2002 03:49:00 PM
A very good photo. some of the people are sooo sharp, they almost look inserted, but I also like the blurry, moving people. Incredible. First impression wasn't all that favorable, but second viewing has greatened my appreciation of this shot. Photo 10 City 10 total 10 (started out as 7)
06/26/2002 08:57:00 AM
Neat. Perfect shutter speed to capture some people blurred and othes sharp. Very nice.
06/25/2002 11:55:00 PM
Awesome motion blur effects! I love this photo! Perhaps if you could have cropped it so it only showed the floor though, it would have more impact. The clock is a great element, but could be stronger if you had cropped more tightly around it. Still, very nice work! Have you seen the movie "Baraka"? I think you should, if you haven't.
06/25/2002 10:38:00 PM
1 of 5 10's ----some will complain about the motion but I see it as a plus
06/25/2002 06:55:00 PM
This is a lovely shot... I really like the motion blur as it adds a nice sense of 'hustle and bustle' to this image... The exposure is also great... I can't imagine if there is a better way to frame this shot or not... based on the quality of this image, I feel assured that you framed it the best way possible... great work! = 9 - jmsetzler

very nice. I feel like I'm there. great capture of the lighting, the motion, and the stillness.
06/25/2002 12:51:00 PM
nice. i love the long exposure elements here. my only minor gripe is that the shot seems a little tilted. it's the only thing keeping this from being really great.
06/25/2002 03:12:00 AM
Nice clear focus with an hint of motion. Good shot."8"Dogman ;-)
06/24/2002 11:42:00 PM
nicely done - time to go home...
06/24/2002 11:00:00 PM
Nice crowd shot. The motion blur is just right to convey your point.
06/24/2002 10:23:00 PM
i love the motion.
06/24/2002 09:30:00 PM
Very well done! This is extremely clean for having used ambient lighting.
06/24/2002 08:37:00 PM
Congratulations – This is the shot I tried for several days to accomplish…..I failed. You on the other hand pulled it off quite eloquently. Truly a masterful shot – crystal clear focus, perfect lighting, the people in the shot are in motion, clearly showing life. - 10

06/24/2002 02:42:00 PM
Fantastic! Just a perfect shutter speed. I love the guy in bottom left looking up. Can't wait to see the info for this shot. I want to take one like this.
06/24/2002 01:29:00 PM
Great! Just enough blur, yet crisp all over. good job
06/24/2002 01:13:00 PM

06/24/2002 01:05:00 PM
Awesome shot, interesting, great color, light, interesting!! Kee
06/24/2002 11:47:00 AM
nice colors
06/24/2002 08:59:00 AM
interesting photo. I like how some of the people were caught in action and others are standing still.
06/24/2002 04:24:00 AM
love the movement effect, though ive seen it in very similar pictures before
06/24/2002 01:26:00 AM
Phenomenal shot! The colours are so vivid with good detail, great subject too! Fits the challenge very nicely! One very minor fault though... the image appears to be a degree or two rotated right.
