Challenge: Country Life (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot Pro 90 IS
Location: Civil War Graveyard lost in a corn field, Illinois
Date: Jun 22, 2003
Date Uploaded: Jun 22, 2003

Moving from the city to the country (real cornfield stix country that is) has taught me one huge lesson. The city makes death a horrible thing, while in the country it is a very natural thing. They embrace it as part of the cycle. Hard concept for me to understand but an infinitely better way of going threw life IMO.

This is a civil war graveyard that is in the middle of a cornfield. I am in the middle of shooting a "Graveyard in IR series" and thought this find a couple days ago really fit the bill.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the topic was the opposite. I hope most here understand how they go hand in hand...

Shot with a Canon Pro 90 and a Hoya 72 IR filter. Switched the Red and Blue channels in PS. That's it.

Thanks... Dave

I was astounded to see that you did not place in top three in that challenge. It's a head shaker. I ran the vote pattern through a statistical analysis to see what was going on, and concluded that there was no unusual voting, just a plain old "gaussian" or normal distribution, albeit with a high standard deviation. I cannot explain this other than to hypothesize that some people just did not understand your submission.
I've had a similar experience with one of my submissions, with an even worse score. Granted, my photo was not nearly as good as yours. I voted yours a 10, BTW, one of only a few I have given in over 8,000 votes.
Don't take to heart the votes of those who seemingly have little imagination. You met the challenge, you submitted a strikingly beautiful, thought-provoking image, and many of us recognized that. Have fun with your photography, and please do continue to contribute to the site.

This will be my last challenge for a while, if not forever. Thanks for all the kind words... Dave

Interesting photo and effect. Border a little uneven.7

Nice image.. not on brief..

I'm not sure if I really like this shot or if I'm creeped out. This was actually somewhere?? What a creepy cool place. I like your balance and use of shapes and negative space though. It makes a good backwards "L" shape that your eye follows back and forth. Well done.

Fascinating shot. Crisp, clear - looks like snow. Just unique. I've been experimenting with infrared too so this is an inspiration. [10]

I think this could have had even more impact without the tree? a good dramatic image
06/27/2003 07:16:43 AM
Very strange effect on this with the infrared. I can't tell what that stuff is on the tree. It looks like mashed potatoes! Really clean image and good composition.

Nice composition -- I think it was a good choice to use infrared.

I love good infrared photos, and this one is no exception. I think your theme here is very strong also. This composition screams of 'death' and 'solitude' in some rural cemetery on a lonely country road. The infrared creates a lot of good tension in this photo by illuminating the greenery into the normal IR glow mode. This is an excellent entry for this challenge. I don't like the title... I think there is a lot of room for creative improvement there :) Kudos on a great shot... = 10

Composition: Spot on
Technical: Fanastic colours and gradient of the sky. A weenie bit grainy, but not too noticable (and considering it's IR, I won't complain!)
Meets challenge: Yes
Overall impression: A very memorable shot.

The infrared makes the shot look kinda weird.... The leaves (?) on the tree look like snow so that makes the shot look unnatural give the otherwise hot appearance of the rest of it. How did the original look?
06/26/2003 12:46:17 AM
Intriguing, creative, composed well.
06/25/2003 07:15:18 PM
This one is definatly one of the best in this challenge...
Like the creepy atmosphere;)

This is my favorite of this challenge! It has an incredibly ethereal feel, I love the smooth gradient of the sky. I very much like the framing as well. One of the best artistic uses of infrared I have seen. Anywhere.

I love this a lot..can't wait for the print!! just beautiful 10

This seems like a really powerful site. Was the photo taken at dusk? I like the hues - the grays in the sky and the tombstones, and the whites on the grasses and the tree. Very nice composition also. a 9 from me.

Awesome photograph!! Very surreal and creepy! wow. I think I'll stare at it for a while -10

IR has worked very well for you here, the quality is stunning! I love the textures, especially of the tree which is razor sharp. There's something about the placement of the stones that bothers me though, maybe I'd have prefered them not to be touching the tree in your photo. 9

This is a terrific shot. I like the coloring and clarity. The tree being to the side is perfect. 10

Wow really neat shot. I wish the lighting wasn't so white on the weeds, but the background color is awesome. Really nice job, -8
