This is my friend Sarena, this was done in all natural light with a 1$ white piece of rolled up posterboard I am now doing my tech project on. :-)

I used to white paper to even out shadows and to make it look like I knew what I was doing.

Since I was holding that and the camera at the same time, the photo was pretty tilted so I had to do a pretty tight crop after in PS, I didn't want to risk cloning out a lot of the "crop edges."

So anyway the editing in no specific order consisted of a crop curves, brightness/contrast, selective color, color balance, hue/saturation, dodging and burning, Neat Image, unsharp mask, clone tool, blur tool on extra grain, border... hrmm and I think that's it. Oh, I also used layers a lot in the process of this, duplicating a layer, adjusting something, then erasing the parts that didn't need it. For example, she was contrasted differently from the background. I also had to tone down the saturation in her spongebob shirt

The end

FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

Oh, goodness, so I haven't done much in the critique club for a while, and here I try doing a couple and I get your picture. I like your comment about using the Bristol board to make you look like you knew what you were doing :)

From a technique point of view, I'm assuming that you wanted to keep the focus shallow, and I think you did a pretty good job of it, except for the hand on the knee which is slightly distracting. The shutter speed of 1/10 is a bit low usually to get clear pictures, especially handheld, and I think that even though the picture looks quite clear, there is a very slight hint of movement, just a little bit. Tripod maybe? Higher ISO? The exposure looks to be fine with what light you had available. The colours are very good, IMO, I particularily like the touches of colour on the bricks. I think you did an excellent job of post-processing.

The composition is also good. I like the tilt, makes the picture dynamic. If anything, and this is my "opinion", it might be too cluttered for a "portrait", it is more like a "candid portrait". Is that a purse strap on her left shoulder? It might have been better to not have that strap there. Same with the wristband - it doesn't add anything to the picture, except for extra not needed colour at the front. I love the pose with the hand on the knee, and the sponge-bob shirt is a great touch, although it looks like one sleeve is slightly rolled up and it might be better straightened out. Love her hair, goes great with the brick background.

Overall, I think this is a good start for something, but it could use a bit of work.

Take care,

Ursula

Good work, Joey! Not a bad finish at all.
You like shooting behind that Chinese restaurant, don't you? :)

Joey- The setting and lighting for this photo is great. Her expression is interesting also, just would like to see a little less casual clothing. Next time have her get into a gothic dress or something. Halloween is coming soon....should be able to find some interesting apparel. Love the brick wall.

Good protrait. Lots of distractions I think that detract from the beautiful face. I would have cropped from the neck up. Beautiful eyes.

Neat...Joey? The face coulda been just a touch sharper, I think, but other than that, really nice.
I like the tilt you got going on. :)

you were almost able to keep the right hand in focus with the rest of the picture... nice try...I really do mean that. Her face tells quite a few stories, I think she would be interesting to sit down and ask her 'what are we doing wrong?" Great composing on the bricks and her dark black shirt......it really is a good picture..wish it was mine!

For me, I think this would have greater impact if cropped above the demented spong bob on her shirt. Getting in tigher to her face. I like the expression you captured.

I like this pic because she looks like someone I would love to talk to. As such, the picture "speaks." I might have gone for a slightly tighter crop on her face, but it is very well composed as it is. Good job.

Beautiful tones and perspective. Good expression too. Very "natural" feel to this shot. Great job!

Have to be honest... at first I passed this image fairly quicky until I had a second and third look and discovered how well it was done... great colors on the wall and excellent composition with a very impressive subject. In the end I voted it one of the best based on mood and feeling... well done... :)

I just like this shot a lot. I like the angle you put the wall behind her, and the way you captured her eyes.

I liked this very much til i got down to the bottom where her fingers are on her knee. They seem somehow too posed. Maybe if her hands hand been linked together there it would have seemed a bit more natural. Still, i love the lighting, the angle and the background. 9

great shot. i like how the top of the picture starts out as kind of a spot light (upper left) but i wish the bottom had less light. have you heard of the term go-bo? it's a flag or some board that goes between the light source and the subject to block off light. in your case, i think blocking off a lot of the light below spongebob would have been better.

I like this image .... A Lot! Very Beautiful model, and great colors. The background is wonderful, and the details you have captured make this image dynamite. I do hope it does very well. Good Luck. <10>

Joey, she's just as lovely in this image as in the others I've seen you post before. Wonderful portrait, technically well-executed, and interesting surroundings that match the feel of the image. Very nice work. :)

thats Joey Lawrence if I am not mistaken. I would have liked more room on the right of the frame.. it looks very much centered at this time...more wall on right may add to the image IMO.

I think I would like this better if you cropped out from above her shoulders down, although the t-shirt with the rabid Sponge Bob speaks volumes about her personality and goes well with the nose jewelry. I lke the colors and textures of the bricks and how it matches the colors of her hair.

Nice picture, I like how the face looks so soft and warm. That is not always easy to capture I have found. I would have cropped the picture some to focus more on the face.
09/12/2005 01:49:44 AM
I like the wall and her pose very much. I think I'd crop right below the dip in the neckline. The design on the shirt and the jeans and wristband only detract from her nice face. The skin tones and the lighting is nice as well.

Excellent job. Cool pose, good eye focus, nice colours in her face and in the background wall. I can even olerate anger Spongebob. The only thing I wish wasn't in the shot s the wrist band ... it does seem t math the rest of the photo.

Very pretty lady, with great eyes. You did a nice job capturing her personality, but a few touches here and there would have definately boosted you at least 2 points.A little cloning of the neck lines, and a little warmer. 8
