For a live sound engineer, this is a peculiarly strange challenge: there's all sorts of arcana I could take shots of, quite a lot of which I suspect most people would not recognise or understand. So I went for something domestic, and perhaps also the contrast between the digital and the analogue - I think there'll be quite a few shots of CD's and their bizarre spectral reflections and refractions: strangely, they don't look as high-tech as a well lit piece of metal.

Spent a long time on the lighting: the key is a 40w lamp, with a piece of 80gsm paper over the shade to diffuse it and placed above and behind the player to get the reflections on the vinyl; two pieces of white card as reflectors to get some light into the front of the arm, and indirect daylight from an uncovered window to get the blue on the arm as it disappears into the distance. WB is set for incandescent light - thus the very blue daylight. Really like the effect of different temperatures of light on metal.

Oh, and I don't know what I mean by the title - but I like it and it seems appropriate, though i couldn't say how.

I walked by an audio store the other day and glanced at the window display and to my surprise all the equipment were turntables. I just had to walk in and look and again I was amazed at all the turntables on display. I felt like I was in the 70's, in a dream sequence or something. I still have mine and will get it out to sample some of my vinyl sounds for comparison as I've been listening to mostly MP3's the past 15 years.

Thanks for the mems. :)

Note for future confused readers of this comment: photo originally titled 'In a pervious existence' - just a typo - but I found a way to correct it :-) after voting.

Thanks for those thoughts and opinions everyone. The reason for the crop being so tight is that I wanted the arm to really loom into the picture, so I needed to get pretty close in to it: also, had i given it much more space, the point of the stylus tended to get lost at this resolution - I really like the sharpness of it against the light.

One of my favs in this challenge. Indi makes some good suggestions, more space at the bottom especially, but it's still great as it is.
You're on a roll, keep it up!

Very nice shot, and a great score to go along with it!
For such a cold subject, you did well to give it life and interest. I do like the lighting and angle you've created. Nice use of dof. Although the color doesn't really add much to the shot, I'm glad you left it. It's sort of a natural b&w shot.
I think it seems a tad flat or grey. The background seems like it should be darker maybe? The crop also seems a little too tight on the bottom and right side. I dunno. It's great as it is so I don't really have a lot of suggestions on improvements... just alternatives. It's a very good technical shot that obviously had enough interest with the viewers to score well. You took a very nice photo of a very ordinary object. Something that not many can do.. and few can do well. Congratulations.

Great photo, excellent composition.

nice macro. I think your DOF is bang on, it makes the record player's arm look like its moving, same with the record (if its not, if it is moving, then you captured that well!) :)

OOPS on the typo. In a previous existence you were a dj or you played lps? I like this shot, but being a young hip hopper I'd have called it "Two Turntables and a Microphone" lol Great shot 9

Wow, I thought I was the only person left in the world with an actual record player (and vinyl). It works for me as a subject. Interesting lighting; good closeup shot.

Nice macro shot. You have chosen a very detailed and interesting record player for this, as well.

10 for concept, 9 for execution: 10 overall. :-> I hear the photo (which is my major grading criteria for this contest), and it's an appealing image overall. I hope you won't mind if the sound it evokes for me is the hiss and pop of running around and around the last groove near the label again and again!

Wondeful macro. Superb composition, great textures and shapes. Nice lighting. I like the blur caused by the exposure length, The dof is spot on. 10
BTW, is the spelling a strange play on words?!

Good job with the motion of the record! Gives a lot more sense of sound than just stopping action... what record am I listening to?
