This was a good idea that went bad. With any luck I'll at least beat my sorry shoe score.
selective darken and smudge
saturation enhancement
Contrast adjust

Oh well, the sorry shoe score out-shined the sorry choo-choo...

Greetings from the Critique Club:

This is a charming picture of a little train with directed lighting to put the engine strongly in the picture with the remainder in the act of emerging into the light.

Unfortunately, as you've already gathered from the comments, the directed lighting wasn't perceived to be strong enough to qualify for "High Contrast."

It has also been my experience that toys (trains included) simply do not score high at DPChallenge. It's one of those facts that one might as well take into consideration in choosing a Challenge entry.

So, you have a delightful image that the voters didn't think met the challenge particularly well, but would make a charming addition to a young person's bedroom wall!

As they say, "win some, lose some."

Good luck in future Challenges.

For me, too many similar gray/black tonal areas. Good attempt though.

Feels a little blurry in the wrong places. Not enough highlight. 8.

Love this shot shot. The red sets it off.

Hm.. well the red against the black does give quite a bit of contrast, colorwise. I like the idea behind the image - the lighting use is very nice and helps tell the photo's story. The focus appears just a little bit soft in areas that I think would be better to have crisp focus. Anywhere that the train is bathed in the strongest of lights should have sharp focus in my opinion. Also, the image seems a bit washed out. The red is vivid, but there is a flatness to the color and entire photo that I'm unable to determine a cause for, so I have no suggestions on how to change it. I think the composition is good and I really like the idea you were going for. I gave a 5.

It looks a bit out of focus to me... unless it is motion blur??? I like your use of lighting, but I think you could have cropped out more on either the left or right of the image. E.g. crop close in on the right of the train, so the front of the train occupies the centre of the shot. (I'm no expert though!)

Good idea, I would have maybe liked to see more light to make the contrast a little more dramatic.

this is more "low key" than "high contrast" - where are the whites?
[post-challenge, I see that this is the only one of the many comments on this picture that you did not consider helpful. how lovely.]

nice composition - not sure about the blue rug, put it on something smooth? How about some brighter brights? Everything is pretty dark.

Nice composition, but the focus is a distraction.

i think you were on the right track ;) but your blacks needed to be more black. also your foreground looks strangely smudged or blurred...though i can't figure out why.
