Greetings from the Critique Club!!!
Initial impact: WOW!! this must be for a contrast challenge.
Meeeting the challenge: Dead on! Only a blind space monkey with a narcoleptic problem could possibly concieve of stating this did not fit the challenge.
Composition: This has a wonderfull composition. The image has a good balance and follows the rule of thirds very well. The multiple points of high contrast alow the veiwers eyes to float around the image landeing evey so often on the delecate feeling hat.
Focus: The focus looks to be Ok. However there are no details in the image to base this off of.
Lighting: Once agin not much can be said about the lighting.. this is to contrasty an image to allow the lighting to have any technical merit.
Subject matter: I love the look and the feel of this peice. The image seems to tell a story though what story that might be I can't tell. While the composition and contrast makes this a pleasing image I find that it is missing something. I think that this could use some details, woodgrains, a crack in the wall a broken window... anything, something. While I can apreciate the technical perfection of a siple peice. I don't tend to lend the red dot painting much merit either.
Overall: Great shot, cool idea, powerfull contrast, but only mildly interesting to look at. A strong image that lacks enough detail to captivate the veiwer for extended periods of time. But then again my only real critique on this image is mainly a matter of personal taste.
Great job!! I look forward to seeing what you come up with in the challenges to come.

Good job, Paul. Your ability to bring out the lights and darks in black & white is amazing. The composition is perfect. Wish I could give advice about the jaggies on the blinds, but I can't (looking forward to the answer, if you get one). Honestly, I have to admit that the jaggies didn't detract enough for me to notice them until I read your comment above.

| Love the lines and contrast here. The hat is great. Not crazy about the border though - not sure it really adds anything to the image. Nice optical illusion too (looks like it might be a mirror reflection, but the hat debunks that notion. |

| Interesting take on this challenge. I find there is a lot of noise in this photo which could be due to the high contrast. There is also some weird marks on the wall that are distracting but could also be noise. I would have liked to see the hat more centered to the 2 windows. Its nice to see art in a photograph rather then JUST a photograph like some I've seen. Well done and good luck in this challenge. <7> |
