Well, I'm stunned! I watched the scores all week and was comparing them to previous challenges. I thought I would get a top 10 place which would have been great.

Some people have asked how the shot was done, although others have already guessed correctly.

I knew exactly what I wanted to do as soon as I saw this challenge, and for thie first time I think I just about got on the camera what I saw in my head.

I cleaned the bike, the shoes and pedals as I had been on a 60 mile run a few days earlier and didn't want my image to feature an insect graveyard!

I managed to attach a tripod, hanging upside down, to the bike by opening the legs slightly and lashing it to the handle bars with various cords and ropes.

The Canon G6 has an LCD screen that pops out and rotates so I was (just) able to see what the camera was seeing while sitting on my bike.

I did a few test shots before deciding on the exact positioning of the camera and the location of the actual shot is literally round the corner from my house. I rode down the (slight) hill and reached to down to the level of the camera using the remote control to get the shot (there are a couple of outtakes where my hand is in the frame!).

(note to Canon: the display switches itself off as a power-saving device after a minute or two if you dont touch the camera. While still cycling I had to reach down and behind the upside down camera to switch the display back on. When you do this the camera reverts back to it's normal mode which makes the wireless remote inoperable, so you have to get off the bike and press the button to switch this function back on - DAMN thats annoying).

Thanks for all the votes and comments!

Scott.

P.S. Trek 1000, Nike Ventoux, Look 247 - in case anyone is interested :P )

09/13/2005 09:26:58 AM
Congrats on you ribbon and a well thought out shoot. I'll have to attempt a Pinarello, Sidi, Dura Ace version but I doubt it will turn out as well as yours. Cheers, a fellow Scott
09/11/2005 05:45:44 PM
Wow what a shot, I am not sure I am brave enough to even attempt something like this. I would go over a bump and my camera would be in pieces due to my rubbish rope knots...lol. amazing, well deserved ribbon.
09/10/2005 09:58:28 AM
Awesome work! Well thought out and executed!

My husband would have a total fit if he thought I would strap my camera down to a moving object! LOL! Maybe I should try something similar?? I wonder what a horse would think of a tripod over his neck rigged into his chest harness? Hmmmmmmmmmm? :-)

Congratulations! Finally a bike shot in the winners circle. I assume you did this similarly to the way I did mine for speed--by mounting the camera to the bike (I attached via my monopod to do it).

But you got such a great angle there, I'd love to see the setup.

Congratulations!

Congrats! You got a better picture of our very good idea :))))

I was dying to see how you did this shot.. too bad you didn't comment..
09/07/2005 12:31:35 AM
I find it really disappointing when the photographer doesn't bother to comment on how they took their pic and the difficulties in getting it right. I gave this a 10 and now I feel cheated
09/07/2005 12:18:01 AM

Looks like an Airborne frame :) Woohoo! Great shot and the motion blur is extraordinary. the sharpness is amazing as well. Go ride and by the way, take some photos too!
09/06/2005 11:34:01 PM
I love how you captured motion and the clarity of the shoes in this shot. 10
09/06/2005 09:31:43 PM
Very smart and flawlessly executed. 9
09/06/2005 11:22:51 AM
Great shot, I like the perspective. The skin above the sock is a bit distracting to me, though.
09/06/2005 02:53:03 AM
Great angle. Front shoes seems somewhat out of focus. Maybe needed to slightly increase depth of field.
09/06/2005 12:10:36 AM
Excellent job, I'll give it more than 10 if I could.
09/05/2005 10:02:00 PM
Neat perspective and panning

Wow, nice angle on the shoes. I like the blur of the background also.
09/04/2005 02:17:26 PM
nice....8
09/04/2005 02:11:10 PM
well created image, good luck
09/03/2005 09:23:05 PM
great clarity - tough to get this shot I bet - I love the panning mode. 7
bumping to a 9
09/03/2005 08:48:04 PM
I thik there is something special about this.
09/03/2005 06:08:47 PM
Good action shot. The lighting did not help you very much. left hand background blown out, foot at bottom of pedal travel may have better focus.
09/03/2005 10:26:59 AM
You pulled this one off. I hope it does well in the ratings, because it is technically one of the top shots. Great Job. -- 8 --
09/02/2005 11:51:51 PM
Cool action shot. How did you get the shot while in motion? Long Zoom?
09/02/2005 06:25:51 PM
A really great action photo - a high scoring one perhaps...
09/02/2005 06:16:34 PM
I feel the speed just looking at the image. Excellent composition ! The shoe on the right foot it's a bit oof, I'm not sure it was with intention. 9.
09/02/2005 05:38:35 PM
nicely done, best of this type in this challenge
09/02/2005 07:01:10 AM
how did you do that while you're driving?
really love the motion in the background and the bevel of the whole pic
good luck
09/02/2005 05:25:17 AM
Excellent shot. The blur is really cool. 10
09/02/2005 03:40:41 AM
This is brilliant! so hard to achieve and yet you have got huge DOF, motion and yet all the bits that matter are sharp. Well done - 10
09/02/2005 02:52:30 AM
now THAT's perspective! freewheeling on a downhill? great shot. hope to see it make the top 10
09/01/2005 11:21:38 PM
Awersome!!
09/01/2005 10:09:46 PM
Amazing shot - looks so real; great picture
09/01/2005 08:19:27 PM
Nice job here, the steadiness of the camera mount is great. Perfect shutter speed for this shot.
09/01/2005 07:30:41 PM
Nicely done. I gave it a 9 only due to the lens flare around the ankle, which looks a bit over exposed to me. One of my highest rated for the challenge.
09/01/2005 05:02:45 PM
great motion capture, good detail on subject and lighting.Normally dont like odd angles this looks good
09/01/2005 04:49:21 PM
Outstanding... in my opinion, best in challenge. Well done... :)
09/01/2005 03:17:34 PM

Outstanding photo - best by far well done
09/01/2005 12:36:46 PM
i can't imagine what position you were in to take this photo... lol... but i love it,,, great photo...
09/01/2005 11:24:53 AM
Was this challenge your validation for buying the new bike shoes? Good thinking! You did a fine job of using this technique to suggest movement. I like the 3 red spots on the far shoe peeking around the down tube. That the chain is not moving, does not diminish nor improve the quality of the shot, but does reduce the speed and intricacy factors a little. Love the green blur of vegetation on the right side. 7.
09/01/2005 05:33:03 AM
My favourite cycling photo!
09/01/2005 02:04:20 AM
are you sure that was a good idea????
Made for a very dynamic image, either way. I'd love to see the set up, how exactly did you attach the camera??
08/31/2005 11:43:52 PM
love it
08/31/2005 11:11:32 PM
Wow, it's a nice picture. It's an interesting angle and the shoes are in almost perfect focus. How'd you get the scenery to be moving while the bike and shoes seem to stay in place? Very cool.
08/31/2005 10:56:30 PM
A third one! And I thought my slow shutter + bike shoe idea was unique. But you've outdone me and the other one by actually rigging the camera to the bike, way cool.
08/31/2005 09:46:52 PM
Excellent shot!
08/31/2005 08:28:02 PM
this is awsome!
how did you do that?
great idea, i think you should send it to nike and have it be an advertisment.
08/31/2005 04:53:58 PM
I love the movement captured in this shot, both with the blur from a slow shutter speed (relative to the speed of the cyclist anyway), and the action in the skewed horizon line which adds to the action in the composition.
08/31/2005 04:15:53 PM
Nice, but the blown highlight behind the shoe detracts from the overall image and effect.
08/31/2005 01:23:35 PM
Wonderful! Just wish the left upper corner wasn't so bright, but high scores from me!
08/31/2005 12:28:24 PM
Nice contrast, but careful with the angle on the shoe. Front shoe could use a tad more light, but all in all, very nice.
08/31/2005 12:04:17 PM
Wow, very cool, very creative.
08/31/2005 11:07:00 AM
woooow, i think it is one of the best in this challenge, nice one
08/31/2005 08:42:25 AM
This is a great photo. Bold bright i love it. Many pictures on this challange are a challange to find the shoes. This is my favorite. wonderful 10
08/31/2005 01:39:30 AM
