Post Challenge:

This was shot backstage for a concert as this trumpet player was warming up. It looked good in color, but I enjoyed the b&w version a little more.

Thanks for the comments.

Greetings from the Critique Club. It took me a while to find anything wrong here and it is so minor. The only thing I could find wrong if you could evewn call it that was the cropping of the horn. It looks just a bit too tight. Everything else is simply put AMAZING. The creativity is fantastic. Focus is perfect and the DOF couldn't have been better. Lighting was exact. The B&W was inspiring. Very nicely done. Keep up the great work.

I was so upset when I saw this category because of the fact that I couldn't enter one of my best shots ever(I ttok it in January of this year), which is a shot similar to this one only it has the trumpet player in the shot and focuses more on the music maker and not the music. Your winning second place validates my work. I can't afford to be a full member of this site just yet, but seeing so many people's art is so inspiring. Seeing that I've executed some of these shots let's me know I'm headed in the right direction artistically. Keep up the good work. It's a fantastic shot!

Very well executed conversion to b/w. Ya got the entire tonal range which is very important for a GOOD b/w shot. The only thing I didn't like was the busy background but it wasn't that big a thing. Congrats on the first ribbon! Good job.

Nice use of B&W. Good shallow DOF. Wristband is a little distracting.

Nicely arranged and positioned in the frame. The backround is a little distracting, but that is something I am sure you had no control over.

Nice strong diagonal, the uninteresting background is well hidden (during the first few important seconds you look at a pic) by the aperture you used. Interesting content, good composition and good B&W toning.

Love this shot, which should place highly. Great composition, and his hands are quite expressive here.

There were lots of "closeup of the instrument" pictures. I felt this was the best. The highlights of the metal are excellent, not too blown out (still some detail). The background helps add contrrast, but isn't totally black which would have made the picture feel less "live". I even like the wedding ring which mirrors the trumpet tone (but of course you didn't have much to do with that). A 9.

sadly, the background distracts a touch. Nice feel & tone to the image but too tightly cropped around the horn

very nicely done. love the diagonal comp. 9 as it is, and sharper focus on the horn would have gotten 10. i know it's a nitpick, but i really do like this.
