Went out on a tall ship today. These are the most beautiful ships that exist, I don't care what anyone else says.

I had to clone out the flecks of water that hit my lens while trying to take this shot--that was a pain.

For all interested, the Lady Washington is based in Seattle, Washington. It tends to travel around a bit but is often in Seattle and does offer wonderful day rides and such. Also, it was used as the HMS Interceptor in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie (the one that gets destroyed). It really is a wonderful picture from a wonderful photographer! :-)

You can ride on some tall ships my visiting their websites and pursuing it that way. This is a shot of the schooner "The Lady Washington" and was taken from the deck of theprivateer "Lynx." I do not know about the Lady Washington, but the Lynx offers summer cruises to Hawaii. Personally, I want to do something like that but I found a group in England that does a several month full eduaction program starting with classroom education and then moving on to drydock refitting and actual sailing time.

Congrats, great light, great framing.

This was my challenge favorite and it got a 10 from me. It kept true to the challenge and I can't imagine the shot being any better had it not be framed between the ropes. Congratulations!

Congrats on your first ribbon with this great shot!!!
06/13/2005 04:25:11 AM
This is a great shot and shows an eye for a good photograph. I am sure there will be many more ribbons to follow.

I took my entry for this challenge during the London GTG in Greenwich...
It was really just a grab shot as the group of us crossed the street...

Thanks everyone who commented and those who were supportive of this amateur attempt to show the beauty of tall ships. When I saw my score during the challenge, I was ecstatic: I had shattered my old PR by nearly a whole point! I figured I'd be in the top 10 percent maybe. The yellow is a very pleasant surprise! The sad part is now that I have ribboned, it will be at least a year, I imagine, before I ribbon again! Also, a couple of months from now, when my post-processing skill have improved (the Oregon GTG was phenomenal in helping me develop [pun intended] both and post-processing and photography skills) I will look back at this picture and see a million ways to have improved it, lol!
06/13/2005 02:06:40 AM
Congrats, so happy that you ribboned with this one.

Nova Tiger strikes gold with his Ilwaco big rig. Congrats! Great shot Ryan. I enjoyed hanging out with you at yesterday's Oregon DPC GTG! All the best.

Sweetness Ryan! Glad to see you finally (well, it hasn't been that long) got yourself a ribbon, and now you do know what that feels like, lol. Great job!

Nice image. One of my favorites so far, one of the few entries with an interesting subject within a great frame. I wonder if you could have lended it more drama with some color or contrast enhamcement??? 8

Yes I like this loads! Most suitable frame that enhances the image well, good colours though I think you could have done more with the sky but still a great image - well done

Wow! Amazing picture! The ship is so clear and lit perfectly. I also like how the ropes are a bit darker, so even though they add to the picture, your attention still goes directly to the ship. Excellent job! -10

Second image that came up for me in the voting. Wow. I like this a lot. very nice framing. Focus and clarity are wonderful. Great focus in all the right places. I love the slight hint of the orange in the boat among all the blues. Wonderfully horizontal horizon. Too often this gets overlooked and is tilted, yours is dead on. Wonderful job. Excellent eye to capture this great image. My only wish is that the boat could have somehow been a bit bigger, but non the less, a wonderful image. ~Heather~
