Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Naturally Framed (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Nikon D70
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED
Location: Chesterton, Warwickshire
Date: May 30, 2005
Aperture: f16
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/100
Galleries: Sky, Landscape
Date Uploaded: Jun 5, 2005

Probably the UK's most unusual windmill, the two milling floors are set up on six pillars with arches between. It dates from 1623 and was designed as a self-conscious "piece of architecture". Last known working was in 1910..

I was really undeceided about this image. I'm not sure how this will be judged, I haven't made my mind up it this is 'naturally framed' or not yet?
Still undeceided!

PP:
Shot in RAW I used layer masks to enhance the colour saturation of the sky. Burnt the middle ground to make the transfer to the forground where a lot of levels and dodging was used to 'bring back' the stone work. Ran de-noise filters and edge sharpening actions.
Cropped out either side to 'naturally frame' the image.

The evening I took these I got quite a few shots of the impressive windmill, hope you enjoy these....

Nice work one of the few 10's I gave out in this challenge. I really love the sun rays showing through toward the bottom. Congrats on the ribbon

I wanted so much to get a shot like this- even before the framing challenge, yet the only similar one I've found so far was looking toward a grocery store. I guess I need to go farther, yes?? Lol Excellent shot!! I love it!

Lovely shot..you`ve worked well on getting exposure right in all the areas of the image without it looking unnatural.
Congratulations.

Congratulations! What I liked most about the image was the immense space it portrays, the columns, the sky all so BIG, really nice to look at for the longest time.

Thanks for all the comments and votes, very much appreciated.

How typical; the images that I have done best with on DPC have all been taken without the knowledge of the weekly challenge title! I took this image on a Monday evening and it was only when returning home that I discovered the challenge was 'framed'.

This is Chesterton Windmill in Warwickshire, last known working was in 1910..

Some other images i took on a magical evening.....

Thanks,
Nordic

This shot made me say, wow. Its really lovely. Such nice colors and lighting. It makes me just want to gaze at the sky and be at peace, while surrounded by this amazing old structure. Great work!

My only criticisim is, & it's a minor one, is it would of looked better if you had got a bit more of the top of the archway. Otherwise a lovely photograph.

I might have liked to see a little more of the top of the arch. Still very pretty and one of my favorites in this challange.

This meets the challenge very well although I'm finding it hard to determine exactly what is your subject besides the somewhat featureless countryside. That aside, the shot is tack sharp and your colors are beautiful. It may be cropped a bit tight up top though I'm sure you have your reasons for this. Good luck!

Could have framed it a little bit higher, getting rid of the unecessary grass at the bottom while completing the arch at the top. Nice shot.

I like this. I would even like it more if there were a bit more on top...just a tiny bit.

Really beautiful! Great clouds and colors. Only thing I would have done was crop out a tiny bit from the sides and try to get a little bit more of the framing in the top.

should be a top 10. Not only is the landscape attractive, but the framing captures my attention equally so. My top 3.

Superb colors and lighting! An 8 from me, would be 10 if the crop were shifted up just a bit (loosing the grass at the bottom, including the whole curve at the top)

I like the texture of these columns and the stone floor, also the lighting in distance is very beautiful and interesting.

This is a wonderfull capture through the columns.
To make this a truley special shot, I feel that another element needs to be in the image, A person between the pillars, or something in the sky..

you need to fix your perpective, so you need a shift lens, gd luck
06/07/2005 10:59:20 PM
The depth of field is so powerful here. I'm amazed you captured so much detail in the stones and the clouds way in the distance. I especially love the cobblestones up front. Great work all around.
