* Greetings from the Critique Club *

First of all, let me say that I remember this image from the challenge very well. You met the challenge with your choice of concept and composition perfectly. Disturbing as suicide may be to some, it is a fact of life and as photographers (the eyes of reality) we shouldn't stray away from illustrating a reality others might find unappealing.

I think your use of B/W in this particular instance was an excellent choice. There's something about the decision itself that IS black and white. The composition I think is also very good. I like the various implements lined up on the counter.

The thing that bothers me most about the photo is the OOF on the rope (chosen method) and the model & chair. I think that some blur would be great on the corpse and chair to imply movement, but I think it's a little too much here (IMHO). I know it took me a moment to even see the feet and chair because of the focus on those objects. Again, I think that some blur is good for this shot, but not quite so much.

I have to say too, that the overturned chair is a really nice touch - it really adds to the reality of this scene. You obviously took a great deal of time setting up for this shot - and it shows - and I think it payed off.

The lighting is also very good here, and the detail on the gun is exquisite. I would like to have seen some of the same attention to clarity on the rest of the "available options".

Overall, I think this was a very good entry & is a strong piece of art on its own. There's a lot of merit here... Very nice job!

Just my 2 cents...

Jimmy

I am commenting on this image in a reaction against the attempt by some to limit the content of DPC to images that conform to their idea of acceptable.

This is unusual in that the image itself conveys indecision rather than simply conveying an action about which there was presumably some indecision. On that front, it meets the challenge far, far more accurately than most entries. I also like the grittiness of it, the imperfection of the composition and the motion of the "corpse" all add to the feel of the final image. What I dislike about it is the fact that for me, it misses the essential issue of suicide. Isn't the decision usually about whether or not to do it rather than how? Certainly the more emotive aspect is that battle between the instinct to survive and the utter conviction that life isn't worth living. _How_ to show _that_ battle is another question altogether!

As a shot depicting sucide choices, I liked the black and white choice, but the image didn't have the snap I look for. B&w takes a lot of practice because we see with color, not gray tones. Hope to see more trys with b&w from you.

Of the suicide images submitted, I found this one to be the most inline with the idea of a decision. Here, the image tells the whole story that the elements included have so well defined. The razors, the gun, the pills, all indicate methods of committing this decision to and end. More so the blurred action in the background, with the fallen chair grants us the glimpse into the final choice the capturing of the decision and it's end result. With or without this title, the image necessitates the inclusion of the keyword decision or choice.

I find the image disturbing in its commentary, which makes it an even better photograph. Some slight technical issues with the level of the table seeming to lean towards the left, however other lines indicate that the shot is actually level and the table is what really is not level. Would have liked to see the legs a bit off from center as the line straight up from all the elements seems a bit static. Otherwise a solid image for this challenge and worthy of bumping up to an 8.

I think we have enought evil in the world without people taking pictures of it, or even suggesting something so horrible.

Sheesh, that's a tough one to look at...so disturbing! It just makes my stomach churn! Good idea though, different from the other suicides.

I see alot of choices but no decision. Big fan of B&W. My only criticism on the picture itself is that the short depth of field has the rope (which is a main character) slightly out of focus.

This is just fantastic. I don't care for your subject matter, but this was technically well-done so I just have to score it well.

I think this meets the challege well but the composition and contrast seem lacking. Maybe crop out the background and use some different lighting.

I don't feel that the image conveys instantly recognizable decision. Suicide seems like a way out of decision, though I see how you gave use the idea of how to do it. I get mixed feelings here. Hard to give it more than a 5. Nice comp. After further thought though... I'm giving it a 6.

What is with all these death photos....jeeez. I'm sorry but if a person made the decision to kill themselves they wouldn't use so many ways then hang. I hate the concept but at least you could have tried being a bit more subtle...i'm mean...this is "overkill"...hey, maybe they'll have a catagory for that.

Took me a moment to figure that out. Morbid, but clever.
