Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Pi (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: Home
Date: Apr 5, 2003
Aperture: F2.8
ISO: 160
Shutter: 1/100
Galleries: Portraiture, Macro
Date Uploaded: Apr 5, 2003

I cut a 'pi' symbol from a piece of white paper and attached it to a sheet of black tag-board, then cut a (lens size) circular hole between the vertical parts of the 'pi' symbol to allow for the camera to be setup/positioned behind it for the photo. I then had my subject (daughter) position her eye in front of the camera which could then capture the reflection of the 'pi' symbol on her eye.

Nice one. Another choice: use a real contact lens painted with Pi symbol... :D

But your trick is better!

Well deserved win, Richard. I know I'm supposed to ignore the low scores but I would love to know why two people thought you should have a 1. Yours was my favorite this week and also the favorite of the math guys I work with. You photos always are the result of great care and expert execution. I look forward to seeing yours in the future.

You really got me fool, cause i can't see how this is possible... unless you have a contact with a pi on it. Very cool shot though.

If this photot doesnt win, I'll be SHOCKED.. I cant understand how you did this without editing (Im assuming a directlight with a Pi shaped filter/blockout on it), but regardless, congrats on a GREAT shot!

This one and the other eye photo are my favorites this week. I hope you share how you did this with us when the challenge is over. To bad the upper right is overexposed but the white of the eye is perfect. Nice Job!

04/08/2003 06:23:25 PM
I like the placement of the eyeball, but it's a bit shabby around the edges though. The idea is very good - trick contact lense?
  Photographer found comment helpful.
04/08/2003 02:51:43 PM
Excellent shot. I would lkie to have the left part of the eye in the photo also, to give more sense of "wholeness." The blown out upper right corner works great. I think forgetting the rule of thirds on this would have worked better, as stated before. Do I take it that is a contact?
  Photographer found comment helpful.
04/08/2003 10:51:50 AM
Is it a contact lense? I don't know how you did it but it works and you impressed me. A little too blown out in the top right for me although itwas your intention, otherwise an excellent photo - 8.

04/08/2003 10:37:55 AM
i like this a lot, however i think a tighter vertical crop would have been better, the top half of the photo above the eye doesn't seem to fit

The colors of the eye shadow really add a "technological feel" to this shot. Very effective cropping and idea.

Great concept and picture. A little too washed out on the edges.

04/07/2003 05:33:28 PM
Fantastic shot! Too bad I can't vote on this one (not a member)... I have to say your effect is absolutely incredible!!! Aside from the effect, I love the detail of this macro shot. On the downside, the overexposed portion around the top and right edges does take away from the overall impact of the shot. Hope this one does well for you!
  Photographer found comment helpful.
04/07/2003 05:06:38 PM
Did you paint that on a contact lens or something? I hope you're going to tell us how you did it. This is my pick of the week. I'll even admit it is better than my own submission. I'm giving it a 10.

04/07/2003 02:34:38 PM
Centered on the eye would have been better. Contacts? Great idea and very ingenious.

ha ha good! I supposed you taped the Pi in the contact lens? Incredible! The only thing is that we should have been able to see the whole eye. Good idea!

Pretty cool however you did it!! But there's too much white space on the right I think. Should have just centered it. Very good shot! 8.
