Challenge: Bokeh (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Location: Tracy, CA
Date: Jan 4, 2005
Aperture: 6.3
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/3200

Taken through the water filled wine glass. I thought this would exemplify the "Bokeh" effect the most. I shot this at the high ISO of 1600 hoping to get grain in the background and hoping that the main subject would remain clear. IMO the Canon 20D coupled with the Sigma 70-200 f:2,8 was an excellent investment. This is at 200 but stopped down to f:6.3, at 2.8 I had a hard time getting enough depth of field to get all of the glass as near to focus as I could.
Enjoy

Dick,

I think this was a great concept. As for noise, the 20D is frikken amazing! Great bokeh also. But I think you would have scored better if it had been something a bit more intriging seen through the glass, anything but the neighbour's house. The reflection at the top and the drops of water on the rim took away from it also. Enough with the negatives. The blue sky against the dark gray bokeh works very well. Technically, the shot was very well taken. Hope this is helpful. :)

An incredibly imaginative shot. Perfect example of how bokeh can truly enhance a shot, and nice in that this is not what you think of as a typical bokeh shot either. Might be kinda fun to crop it a bit and give it a 180 turn. Just to see. 10

Lovely image, but I don't think the background helps the image at all. It's appropriate for the picture, but it's a very neutral element.

It´s a good Idea with good bokeh but a little tight for my opinion, the glass ever so barelyl fits in the frame. Good shot anyways, good luck in this challenge.

I love the idea, but I keep wanting to turn the photo upside down. Well done.

Interesting idea, I think though that revealing more of the (blurred) backround, i.e. cropping less tightly would be a better composition (7)

Well it is a neat photo to an extent. The Bokeh is actually rather dull and it does not seem to go with the image we see in the glass, meaning it does not see right that the gray background when seen through the glass would resolve to that nice clear image. The background does not seem to fit. To be honest it looks like a gray card behind the glass.

Great shot. The only distracting part of the image is drops around the top of the glass.

ay-yi-yi...where to begin? ok, as an image, i love it, and will add it to my faves. however, i don't understand why you left the water drops? why didn't you take the time to wipe them down? along these lines, this being an advanced editing challenge, you could have burned out the glare at the top center of the glass.

now, as far as the challenge goes, bokeh, by whatever definition you want to employ, involves the background and/or foreground contributing to the overall image. here, it is too dark to do anything other than offer contrast.

i may be wrong, but your score will probably not be where you want it to be. don't let it faze you. this is an great capture--i just don't thing it's a great challenge entry. just keep shooting and submitting, and pay attention to whatever other comments you get. good luck!

Good idea. Good picture but I don't see how the background helps it at all.
