Challenge: Bokeh (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Muir Woods, CA
Date: Jan 3, 2005
Aperture: F5.6
ISO: 100
Galleries: Nature, Floral
Date Uploaded: Jan 4, 2005

After reading the threads about bokeh, I went out to try a few. I was at Muir woods and this gave me a good opportunity to use the light coming through trees for my background. found this tree with so many yellow leaves right in between green leaves. shot this overhead with my 300mm lens at f5.6
Cropped to about 60%, rotated for composition and then photoshop to bring out the colors. I had to selectively change color balance and hue/saturation for the lead and background. Also for the background, I did varying green/blue settings on shadow and hightlights to separate green and blue and let them come out.
I hope you like it :)

i'm not quite sure what to make of your entry; it isn't really moving me. i think that your bokeh is a bit too strong and the shape of the leaf is a bit disconcerting. on one hand, you have proven to yourself that you can capture a bokeh effect; now what you need to do put it to work to enhance your images.

At first I looked at this and thought, "oh yeah, so they got a leaf and were able to get some diffused light spot in the background". But as I looked at it more it grew on me to a surprising extent. The lighting on the leaf is beautiful and that golden, sunlit colour just makes me feel warm and happy. But it's only with the addition of the pale, colour-coloured light spots that the composition suddenly achieves something more than just a leaf with some negative space included in the frame. It really works for me. One of my top 11 in this challenge.

The foreground is fantastic. The composition of light circles in the background could've been better . Overall, a nice shot

Nice contrast and bokeh. I bet this will do well.

Nice shot but it would be more intresting if you cropped it tighter. the white lights or whatever are a distraction from the delicate intricacy of the leaf.

Nice and simple, I like the contrast between gold/yellow leaf and greenish/bluish background, works very nicely together. Light flares at the top complement the composition well to give a balanced picture (10)

Very nice picture, any other challenge I would give it a 8.
But from what I understand, the background is supposed to compliment the foreground, unfortunetely I canot see what the Bokeh background is.....Good shot tho...6

The background whites help the composition a lot... in fact, they make it. This image probably better meets the challenge than the other 40 or so I've looked at so far.

The short definition of Bokeh from KenRockwell.com, which I am using for voting on this challenge: "Bokeh describes the rendition of out-of-focus points of light." Check. Is the subject enhanced by the bokeh of the background? Yes. This is similar to my own shot. Therefore I will score it highly ;)

The leaf itself is very nice. The placement of the artefacts in such a linear mode is not working IMO; the image is stratified into zones, where I'd like to see a smoother inhterplay between foreground and BG.
