 A view of the floor of the atrium of the Mitchell fundamental physics and astronomy center at Texas A&M University's main campus. The object in the middle of the atrium, suspended from a long cable that extends all the way to the ceiling 83 feet above, is a giant Foucault pendulum. It swings in perpetual motion to visualize the movement of the earth beneath it. So in a very real sense this building is itself a gigantic physics instrument.
