This is a very large flag and the day was very windy. There were wonderful waves running through the fabric. I froze them by using a very fast shutter speed - 1/1000. I chose to shoot just a portion of the flag so I could concentrate on the waves.

With all due respect to lisae, I really doubt that someone is going to go through all of the trouble of generating a 3D version of something like this. I mean, that's the whole point of stock photography -- if you don't have the time to photograph something yourself, you go buy it! So this was perfect in all respects. Congrats on the ribbon!

I could see why the stars were dark. To me, that didn't detract from the photo at all... the backlighting was the most appealing aspect of this photo to me. I also like it being backwards!

Congratulations on coming 3rd.

By the way... I thought I would let you know that after I left the comment about thinking I could render this in a 3D program, I decided to set that as a challenge to myself. I shouldn't say things like that and not be able to back them up (otherwise it's like that saying "your mouth is writing cheques your ass can't cash!"). So stay tuned, I'm going to try, and if I fail, I'll take the comment back! :)

Thanks for all the wonderful comments and the very good and on target critiques.
For those who suggested flipping the picture to have the blue in the upper left - I tried this and it is a much better photograph! I'll look at things from all angles next time.
Another repeat input was the "not white stars". The reason they are dark is that the flag is strongly backlighted. The red and white stripes and blue field are translucent material and that gives the great lighting. The stars are doubled so that they show white from both sides and I think they are a different material - so when backlighted, they show up as a shadow and dark. Spot editing might have been a good choice here, but ... I'll try something to see if I can improve this.
Again, thanks for the inputs on this photograph and the the prior ones - the inputs really help.

This is a technically perfect photo of an American flag, with colours that will probably make a lot of people say "WOW! those colours POP!". But photos like this leave me cold... not because of the subject matter, more because of the crisp "perfect" look. I could render this in a 3D program and not be able to tell the difference.

Wow, powerful and patriotic image. Very good color, but I do wish the stars looked more white (I\'ve tried this, so I know my wish is either impossible or nearly impossible, so no score effect) 9 Swash - Changed my mind, it's a 10!

Fantastic composition and incredible colors. I'd be very intrested in the processing you used to enhance this image.

Nice crisp and clean look. Too bad the stars don't appear white.

Stunning shot of the flag. I really love it. You see lots of photos of flags these days, but this composition is one of the best I've seen. Nice clear, sharply focused shot, with great color.

You have a technically great picture, but I think you need to flip it horizontally. I do not think you could sell many pictures of the backside of the US flag. 5

Excellent! The colours are so vivid and sharp, kind of crispy in a way. The crop and lighting are wonderful. Its a stock photo for sure.

super sweet color! love it!
02/26/2003 09:48:28 PM
I'm not a big fan of flag shots... and I got oversaturated quickly with US flags. :-P
But this is the BEST flag shot I've ever seen! The cropiing is perfect and the colors...... woooooooo the colors!! I would see this in a stock mag.

Beautiful color, but should be mirrored (the "right" side of the flag)
02/26/2003 08:35:10 AM
Really nice vivid colours, and the composition is good. I think that it would look better if the stars were their normal white though.

Only thing is the stars aren't white. :( Very nice however.

Fantastic colors. I like this a lot.

Lovely. And I hope people don't debate about it in the forums.

This is a perfect flag picture, lovely textures and very bold colours and focus.

Wow. That's all I can say. 10

Good example of a stock image. While the market would be mainly US, the quality and composition allows for some overlay.

The colors are outstanding! Great shot. And good luck. 9

Great shot, just the way I like them, sharp crisp and clear. Good work.

Excellent shot. Beautiful colors and textures. Perfect stock photo. 10.

For stock, this would be more useful flipped horizontally. Good capture, though. 7 Jak

Much more original approach to this subject than what we have seen in the past weeks. Solid composition. However I doubt that there is still a big demand for "stars ans stripes" items in commercial stock photography.

Tremendous colors. I wish the stars were on this side so they'd be white. THe waves in the flag are great though. I like the little bit of background showing. Gives a little perspective so to speak. Great job

Fantastic... better ....than my "Columbia"... in Perspective.... I see the Pic as a tribute to the Shuttle 7... (black stars in mourning)...a Classic 10... I can't say enough....My, My.... thank you... for this PIcture

Stock Photography mainly catered to the us. Your colours are over saturated and it looks oversharpened (but I could be wrong). Another flag picture is alright but there's nothing spectacular to help it stand out

Wow this is beautiful - why are the stards not white? The texture in the flag is amazing. I love the lighting. It's gorgeous! 10

I think this may be the most striking Photograph of a US Flag I have ever seen. What color! WOW! The only little bit of criticism would be that I wish you could see the white of the stars more but I seriously doubt that could be helped. Beautiful!!! I am so glad you didn't put a border on this shot.

Rich rich colors............this is a WOW shot. Nice light, color, composition, focus.....10!!
02/24/2003 02:25:18 PM
One of the most beautiful photos of the flag I have ever seen. The flag appears to be satin. An awesome photo. It's a 10 for me.
02/24/2003 02:00:18 PM
beautiful shot... very strong color :) I think that mirroring this shot horizontally to put the blue in the upper left would make a stronger and more 'correct' composition of the flag :) - setzler

Last time I checked, the stars on the american flag are white.. DOn't know why it does not look that way on this image, but it certainly pulls down the overall of this otherwise very good picture (6)

This would have taken a ribbon over in the Cliches challenge, too. Very nice work, photographically, and this might very easily hang in any schoolroom, governemnt office, or small business capitalizing on our new wave of patriotism.
02/24/2003 12:31:46 AM
This has to be the best flag photo I've seen. The color and clarity are superb !!! = 10

A perfect 10 - gorgeous photo!
