Motion panning of fast moving birds is very difficult to capture. It requires low light in order to use a slow enough shutter speed to get a blur of the backround from the movement of the camera. The panning of the camera must match the speed of the bird, be on the same horizontal plane as the bird's flight, and the focus has to be set at the proper distance to the bird which means you have to anticipate where the bird is going to be at the moment you press the shutter and pan the camera in order to get a sharp subject. There are some tricks I use to anticipate the bird's flight using high speed shutter release but none-the-less it takes a lot of guesswork, preparation and trial and error to get it all right. The bottom line is you have to be very lucky and take a ridiculous number of captures to get one that is satisfactory! I finally got one that I was happy with. I hope you like it also.

An image that really makes me glad I've come of age in the digital era. Never in a million years would I try for something like this on film, but hundreds of throwaway digital exposures are worth it just for the chance to capture something like this. Outstanding work!

Great looking image. Nice and sharp. Background seems more out of focus than motion blurred.

I'm wishing the background were just a tad lighter but this is a stunning photo. Maybe a large crop, but it works. Good title.
