I made this collage to commemorate my grandfather who was born in 1917. He bought this beautiful Rolleiflex 3.5 TLR film camera in 1954. The young boy in black & white is my father born in 1949, 8 years old when the picture was shot. Right next to him in colour, is my own son when he is also 8 years old in 2021. Next frame to the right is my daughter, frames to the left are my fathers brothers in the arms of their mother, my grandmother. The picture contains many items related to film photography. The Kodak Reference Handbook is from 1943 and is absolutely as relevant today as it was 80 years ago, the fundamentals of light capture and lens design hasn't changed one bit, the book was also my grandfathers and I assume he learnt to develop film with it. Other details contain old pictures from Reykjavik, shot somewhere between 1954 and 1960, with the same camera. I developed the color frames of my kids myself in the kitchen sink, like my grandfather who also developed his pictures by himself. This particular Rolleiflex has managed to connect four generations of family, I can only hope my kids will carry the torch, the love of photography. Nothing was fixed in post, this is as authentic as it gets, aside from a little focus stacking to maxmize depth of field at this close angle and some color processing of course. Picture was shot on Canon R5 with RF 35/1.8 Macro and Godox AD100 Pro lights. |
