Indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest tell that Raven, after restoring light and the sun and moon, found a large shell on the shore with sounds of creatures inside. Pecking, prying, and knocking did not open the shell. Raven brought red berries one by one. The people inside cautiously emerged and enjoyed the berries. Some of the people spread their arms and flew into the sky as the first birds; some people slid into the water to become the first fish, and others walked into the woods and became the first deer and bear and other creatures of the woods. The remaining people -- red, brown, yellow, black, and white -- became the first humans, brothers and sisters with all other creatures. A separate story tells that Raven can cross from our world to the spirit world and return with a red berry, the last-chance cure for souls on the brink of everlasting evil.
