Kody came into our lives about 7 years ago. We think he was used as a hunting dog, the people who had him just dumped him off in the street. We don't know how long he was living on the streets. He was very skinny and his white spots were green and dirty from rolling in the grass and dirt. Over the period of a month or two we acclimated him into our home with lots of love. Kody is the sweetest dog on earth.

I love the look in Kody’s eyes. Your story of him is very heartwarming. We have a beagle mix, Cooper, who has been in many of my entries so I am familiar with Kody’s character traits and can relate very well to him. Your composition expresses his personality so well! He is a lucky dog to have such a loving owner.

Just to clarify why I chose a dark background for this challenge. I didn't want any distractions around the subject, this image was for me totally about Kody. I wanted to take a portrait of him long before this challenge which pushed me to do it now.
Kody is sitting on the staircase landing near a window he loves to lookout.
I used natural lighting from the window with a reflector for the left side of his face.
I hung a black fabric over the back of the banister behind him for a regal looking portrait.
BTW, he got a cookie before the shoot. :)
Thank you all for the lovely comments on this image and for my new found confidence in my images.

Awwww... Debbi! Thank you for rescuing this beautiful soul. She looks like she would be the best friend ever. My best friend has a dog rescue organization, so I hear stories like this every day. We try to take glamour photos to help each one find a family like yours. It just breaks my heart that people on this earth could be so cruel to something so innocent and undeserving! Your photo of Kody is amazing. I love how she kind of fades into the shadows. So beautiful!

He has that look, i.e. “Are you done yet?” Nicely photographed. I would like more room at the top, but that’s just me.

What a handsome dog. I like the wistful look you have captured - I would guess he is gazing longingly at a treat held just above the photographer? A bit of a shame you have lost so much of the detail in the shadow areas - possibly deliberately designed to hide some clutter.
