thankyou everyone for your comments during and after voting ..

if anyone is interested .. i shot this fly while he was on my mandarin tree .. there was a slight breeze .. which makes it very difficult to get an insect in focus ..
i focus stacked two photos which luckily were almost the same .. one for all of him and one for the antennae at the front of his face ..
I have to manually focus stack because the photos i take of insects are always slightly different in this environment ..
also i'll take a heap of photos hoping for the focus where i want it and hoping to be able to focus stack later .. often this isnt possible because the slightest movement will mean that i can't focus stack for a standard edit challenge because the images look too different ...
what i find the most challenging in this type of shot is staying perfectly still .. ie when standing up .. its much easier when they are on a blade of grass or something and i'm sitting or crouching down .. that way its easier to brace yourself ..

anyway .. i'm really happy to have the yellow ribbon in this challenge ..
Larry and Sandy totally nailed it ... very honoured to be in the same 'room' with them .. xx

writing this after lots of comments .. felt I'd share my 'set-up' ..

I actually think flys are beautiful, but this is an excellent shot!

Very very excellent image Roz! The skill to capture the DOF and detail here shows through very well. I am guessing the low scores due to the mono version? Who the heck knows.

Just an amazing capture. I love it in black and white. The detail is incredible. They are so skidish I can only imagine your sneaking up to him to get the shot or do you wait for him to come to you? I wouldn’t be able to get this so sharp on a moving target without a tripod.

Another fantastic shot, Roz. I only once did a shot of a fly in July 2010 and a voter thought I was you. Great compliment for me.
I love your work. Many congrats on your ribbon.

Ever since I saw a movie about how flies carry germs that showed one landing on dog-doo and then on food on a picnic table (of course leaving dog-doo behind), I've hated these creatures. But this is a splendid capture and, as Lydia says, the tones are gorgeous. Congratulations on the ribbon.

*gasp*

This is a PERFECT black and white image.

Perfection.

I wish it had been shot head-on to make it fit the challenge topic better, but I suspect it will be near the top anyway.

SUCH a wonderful image!
