Hi all, thank you very much for your kind comments.
I was happy to live for more than 11 years in Singapore (my company internal move). Not only Singapore itself is an absolute amazing city (I am still terribly missing it) but that also gave me an opportunity to visit many remote places in Asia and Oceania. This picture I shot in the remote Chinese province in the southern mountains near Laos border. The people there started to cultivate rice more then 3000 years ago. The climate for that Is ideal — warm and very humid, the mountains are almost permanently covered with fog and you have rain almost every day (good for rice, nightmare for photographers). You can imagine how extended betone these rice terraces today, after 3000 years of permanent building. The terraces climb from bottom valleys to the mountains tops and continue to horisont as far as you can see. The whole landscape is changed but it is still in harmony with the surrounding nature. The people there still produce rice as their ancestors have been doing for thousands of years.
The area was very difficult to reach only few years ago. Now you see tourists coming in exponentially increasing numbers ... you see here and there hotels and hostels growing like mushrooms after rain ... many locals change to tourists business. I am afraid, the Virgin charm of this place will be lost soon ... if not lost already ....

As I said earlier, I love this - sincerely wish it had placed higher. This is not a scene I've ever witnessed nor shall I ever have the chance to . . . but the photo transports me and I love traveling this way, too. Congratulations on the HM.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Great photo and congrats on 4th place, you just missed out on a ribbon. What I really liked about the photo is a) the composition and b) the story that the photo tells and I think you did a great job. I love the fog and the wetness and the terrible weather in this photo because it really does show that he'll work in any weather.

Technical: The composition is great. The bit of blur on the mans shovel shows that he's moving and doing his work instead of just posing for you. The amount of detail in the water is incredible.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me!

This kind of farming fascinates me. I've seen landscapes of greater expanse, but the closer look featuring the worker is highly effective. Love the glimpse we get of the far side of this terraced valley . . . and of the mountains beyond. Beautifully composed. Unusual. Artistic. Authentic. This is one of my few 10's. (Voted earlier)
