This is a composite of two photos that compare the size of the Moon to Andromeda. Andromeda is actually nearly 6x the size of the moon as viewed from the surface of the Earth. This scale comparison is extremely accurate, with both images captured at the exact same focal length of 800mm and with the same camera. Of course this is just apparent size in our sky on Earth, as Andromeda is MUCH further away. Given that the Moon is only 238,900 miles from the Earth and Andromeda is more than 2.5 million light years away, isn’t it staggering to think that Andromeda is the width of 6 full moons laid side by side in our night sky!

This image was shot with Canon 5DSR at F/5.6, The galaxy portion is a stack of 10 exposures of 10 minutes each for a total exposure time of 1 hour and ISO 1600 using a 800mm lens. The Moon, also shot at 800mm, is a stack of 9 exposures done at F/11, ISO 500 and 1/400th of a sec.

Stacking of Andromeda was done using DeepSky Stacker 4.1.1. Image was exported as a 32 bit tiff file and stretching done with Photoshop CC. I then converted it to a 16 bit image and did some final touch up. Stacking of the Moon image was done in Photoshop.
