These are asian lady beetles. They are one of the most variable species in the world with an exceptionally wide range of color forms.

These little guys are all around my house in the summer and warm days in the autumn. Unfortunately for me they are rare in the winter. I had to go around the house and check the windowsills, corners in the carpeted rooms, and in the crevices of the floor boards in the outdoor porch to harvest enough carcasses for this picture. They had to be washed in order to remove accumulated dirt and lint. Luckily I was able to collect enough whole ones with diverse characterization to make this picture interesting. My wife does not even ask what I am doing anymore!

Thanks for the votes and the blue ribbon. They would have been proud!

when this rolled over i checked this out and was going to comment .. then a small furry creature needed my attention .. toilet training .. you've gotta be on the ball 24/7 ..
then the next day i read how you got the dq .. and the conversation about restating it .. i'm sooooo happy that the sc put this back with its blue ribbon ..
its BRILLIANT .. !! ..
i loved reading about what you did to get this image .. and i love reading all the shenanigans you go thru to create your amazing photos for the challenges .. can i have some of the drive you have .. lol ..
anyway .. its great to read a story with a happy ending .. and even tho these little ladybugs have passed their use by date as living beings .. they certainly didnt for the excellent photo you entered in the challenge .
many congratulations on the blue .. just perfect ..:)

Lawrence,
Hey, i was really enjoying this neck-neck-neck competition for third place in the points and ribbon lineup ... so i was shocked to see the DQ ... it did not look like a composite to me, sorry about that... i guess it is all down to the Dec FS and HDR... ;0

Sorry about the disq. I don't quite follow what happened? I had a 3rd place pic disq last week. Unfortunately I cropped it, which wasn't allowed. Well at least my one in this challenge moved from 3rd to 2nd. Unfortunately at the cost of your first :( Good luck for the next one and a happy new year to you.

In defense of my DQ, I had submitted this picture to the site council prior to it’s submission as allowed in the rules for advice about if the texture as used was allowable. I received a reply that stated it was OK.

Ohhh shame about the DQ, you’ve dropped out of the top three now, maybe your FS or HDR will propel you forward.

I am in awe of the creativity and energy you expend to get these great shots! The back story about your juggler with the eggs was fascinating!! I went to your page and saw your first blue was done with lady bugs and superglue. WOW!! Photography should be fun and it is wonderful to see someone enjoying it to the fullest!! Congrats on another blue! I can't wait to see the next one!!

Congrats on the ribbon. I love the story behind it :-). Wife must be careful - next step is that she has to collect the beetles ;-P

Beautiful variegated pattern. The ladybugs, distinct individuals, find serene harmony in concert. The overall orange is sumptuous.
Personal favorite of the challenge.
