Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Black & White II (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Tonawanda, NY
Date: Nov 14, 2004
Aperture: f/16.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/125
Galleries: Black and White, Action
Date Uploaded: Nov 14, 2004

Taken in a studio setting, with B800 and B400 Alien Bees used as main and fill lights, respectively. Using the PS channel mixer set to monochrome, I reduced the background to white and the fist to shades of gray.

The image was cropped and rotated to its present position. Minor contrast/brightness and usm were done to produce the final image.

My Latin isn't great (...in fact, it's fake), but I thought this sounded better than "Extended Fist of Man".

Oh well, it'll be interesting watching the roller coaster votes come in... Thanks for looking, commenting and/or voting.

I didn't vote in this challenge, but I would have voted this one high. Nice detail and great choice of black and white. I love that the hand is dirty, a working mans hand. Nice shot.

returning for comments:
A very effective, almost graphical representation. Great b/w and title. Bumping up.

I am scoring this one high right off the bat for its immediate impact. I jumped a little when it came up! 8-| Good job.

Good technique, but the subject has no appeal... I guess the composition could be a little more interesting as well.

I like the tones here, good job

Dunno about the name. The focus is too far back. Sharpness is nice, and oil or whatever, to paint the fingers in good light.

Very good...Like the Hi Key background and the detail and lighting on the subject. Could I get a thumbnail of this to send to the person who just gave me a 3? LOL! .

Fascinating...the tonal contrast is spot-on.

Not right for b/w IMO

The title just turned me off before I saw the pic (I must be a sick puppy). BUT I cant wait to see what you did to get the look. I do like the pic tho.

Its too confined, you could box it in, a little movement, raise or lower the fist about an inch and keep the arm where it is, and it would be superb.

Your hand has five fingers,
each capable of creating...
-Or destroying.
I hope we die holding hands, but it's hard to hold your hand
When it's a fist.

Anywho...This picture rocks!

Beautiful light, tone and texture..well done for a high imapct shot in this challenge. but watch your titles: I nearly mis-read this one and couldn't sit down for a week.

Very powerful - in every sense - just wish the focus wasn't ever so slightly soft close up. Hope you do well with this

Is this a threat? lol. A little blown out at the bottom. Nice subject. Evocative. Nice texture. The subject sits in a nice rectangle that I think you could've broken to make the image more dynamic.

Powerful. Great balance between foreground and background. Dark color of the skin makes one think that the hand is from a miner.
