Many of us have silver (Amalgam) fillings which are older than 15 years. These fillings break down around the margins, leak and can cause the natural tooth to crack. The blue halo around this filling is decay deep into the tooth that is caused by bacteria. The bacteria seeps in around the leaking margin. These fillings should be replaced. Modern dentistry has several options for repairing teeth with defective fillings. See your dentist for routine examinations to prevent dental problems

This photo was taken with an intraoral camera. Here is a before and after shot of a tooth that had a defective amalgam and it was replaced with a bonded composite restoration.
