This needed a bump to the recently commented page. Fantastic. I can't believe I never noticed it before. Perfect high contrast! WOW

This is a great shot, I think that you may want to place the eyes at about 2/3 down from top to help center interest on the subject. Great job!

This is lovely! A very natural portrait of a beautiful young musician. She will treasure it for years to come. Congrats on your first ribbon!

Congrats on your first ribbon, perhaps less space in the top, and more of the hand in the bottom would have improved this IMO...

Wow! How did you do this without a studio or lights? How did you get the great white background?

returning for comments.
This is very hard task to pull off. Low key inside a high key. However, to a degree it could pass as an artistic effort. I would love to see the left hand, but I know, I am asking too much. Despite my minor complains the composition is nice. Bumping up.

my favorite of the challenge, and only 10. Such a great capture, wonderfully lit, and I *love* the upper negative space. The composition is a classic use of triangle, and almost leads me in an X from the bottom of the violin through to the face, down the arm to the hand, and right back up the bow.

It also helps that the girl has such a .. haunting.. look.

The high key here works very well. Lovely expression and tones, I might've cropped a bit more from the top, and left the ends of her fingers in, but that's just me. : )

Nice lines... Love the dress blending into the background... Implied triangles are very strong... Solid 10 in my book :)

Lighting is very good in my opinion. I'm not too fond of the empty space at the top, it's either too small (not impressive enough as negative space) or too large (takes away attention from the girl).
11/06/2004 05:34:35 PM
Good viewpoint, good model and nice lighting. I find it very crucial to include the hands and the head of the violin.

Very sweet portrait. I like the crossing diagonal lines very much. I kind of miss the bow tip but see that if it were included the girl's hand would be out of the picture. I love her expression too.

One of my 2 10's in this challenge. This is so much more visually pleasing than the still-life shots of violins that I've been sifting through. Excellent job!

Like the duo-tone effect you've created -- very punch darks and nice high key effects. I feel the crop is a bit tight on the bottom. As presented, one of my favorites this challenge

Very good high key work. I have to admit that her head looks a bit unhinged to me, and it makes the image a little disturbing for me. Just an opinion, of course.
11/01/2004 12:39:05 PM
Nice simple display of music. Would have liked to see the complete violin though.

Great shot. Composition is ideal and contrast is fantastic. I really love the shot. I feel this one is going very high. Well done, and good luck.

Very nice high contrast. The black hair just attracts the eye to the center and then the details below it. Very nice geometry involved. Plus that smile! Very enigmatic... Mona Lisa like... Beautiful, I love it! The only reason I don't give it a perfect 10 is because I would've liked to see nice finger position on the neck... Even if it's akward (it would've added some charm even).
