Challenge: Transitions (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix 1400
Location: Altoona, Pa

Aperture: 125
ISO: f4.0
Shutter: 1/250

GP-9 on display at Horshoe Curve in Altoona. I had hoped to get a picture of the K4 Pacific-type steam engine, but found out that it hasn't been there since 1985. The engine in the shot is from the 1940s/1950s era of the Pennsylvania Railroad

Thanks for all the comments. I wasn't sure my transition would get across...Manic, you got it. As for the picture itself, I don't think it is underexposed. The actual engine is black, and it was raining when I took this (hence the bright sky and the fading hills).

Nice image, but where's the transition?
04/28/2002 06:01:00 PM
the camera feels tilted to the right, which makes the train les imposing than it could be, it's shrinking away a bit.

I dont feel there's enough contrast in this image. Do you think black and white was the best choice for this picture?
04/27/2002 11:43:00 AM
black and white serves this picture well, it gives it an eerie feeling, almost.

love the composition, the use of b&w.

nice. needs a little bit of juicing in levels to bring out the lighter elements, but extremely sharp, good DOF

I feel the photo is just a little too dark - but like the subject matter.

Maybe a little more light would have helped bring out the detail, but interesting black and white study.

Nice pic, but I don't get the transition here .......

This shot feels a bit underexposed and dark to me. I want to see detail in the train, but am unable to.

This looks under-exposed. The sky is flat white anyway, but it looks like your camera was treating it as important. I like the detail, and the way the hills mist out.

I'm failing to recognize your transition. The title says past to present, but the image shows nothing of either past or pressent. I see a train and some branches.

Back to the Future 3 had a train in it. Is that what you're getting at ? :)
04/23/2002 09:35:00 AM
doesn't seem like a transition to me, perhaps if there was an older (or newer) engine next to it...
04/22/2002 10:05:00 PM
what is the transition, the photo itself is nice, but the challenge hasn't been met here
04/22/2002 08:27:00 PM
jmsetzler loves black and whites :) Your composition here is very nice and the darkness of this photo adds to the antique value of the train. this would also look good in a sepia tone.... nice shot!

Hmmmm, for transitions I think a steam loco would have been better.

A very nice composition. (Added:) The more I see this, the more it stands out as an excellent photo. Fantastic job!

the transition is a bit of a stretch but the photo is nice.
04/22/2002 01:25:00 PM
A bit too dark. I don't see how a fenced up train means a transition.
04/22/2002 12:53:00 PM
good train picture but whats the transition?
04/22/2002 12:41:00 PM
what a beautiful and nostalgic shot.

I wish there was more detail in the foreground.
04/22/2002 08:05:00 AM
i dont get the transition
04/22/2002 07:17:00 AM
not sure I really get the transition here - I can see the old, where's the new ? Just the fact that the railings are around it ? The sky detracts from this - nothing in it - too white/grey.
04/25/2002 01:01:00 PM
I think your transition is supposed to be from use to disuse/museum piece, but it took quite a bit of thought
