I may have done too good of an editing job on this, LOL!!! It seems viewers think I was just at the right place at the right time...

Here is the base image for the shot:

It is the freshly paved street down the block. The sky was just too blown out to save so I had to put in a sky from a different day. Except for the three foreground cars and the "ditch", everything else was already there.

The "ditch", by the way, may be one of the most complicated edits I've ever done. It's comprised from bits and pieces of about 15 different shots. The hardest part was getting the perspective right. It took me about 3 days and 2 separate outings to Griffith Park (where there are a lot of chewed up asphalt roads to get the "edges" of the ditch, and plenty of dirt and cracks for the bottom) to get it "just right". Then of course the lighting was inconsistent so I had to wrestle with those issues.

The cars I caught as they pulled into or out of their parking spots, and just pasted them into place. The one falling into the ditch I tilted and warped just a little to make look like it was actually falling in. All the tail/headlights were created in post, using a technique I learned from the day to night thread.

The rest of the cars, as you can see from the base image, were simply parked on either side of the street, but with the ditch taking up most of the pavement, it appears as if they are driving in a line.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments! I'm actually just a little relieved I didn't finish in the top 5: uploading all the included images would have taken quite a while :)

I concur, very impressive editing Johanna! It shows how important it is to actually take the time to shoot the appropriate photos for a given composite, makes things much more convincing. Congratulations on the top ten.

Wild! Is this real or am I just naive? In any case, it's a startling image that quite suits the challenge. Well done.
