This was taken emmediately after a rain. The whole scene had a freshness that I tried to capture. I felt this photo leant itself very well to black and white because it was the texture and contrasting shapes that I wanted to reveal.

I love this photo. I was just looking at it again (in its small size), it looks like a stero picture, from the 1800s. I love the fact that there are places like this in the U.S.

Who ever gave this image a 1,2 or 3 should be revoked from photography. They should never grab a camera, because if they think this is bad they will never take a good image, ever!!!! This is a stunning example of landscape imagery taken by (IMO) the best photographer on this site.

Congrats Tim. I still think the should be first place....

Congrats...I see I goofed in my comment about cropping. I really meant the left tree not right.
01/21/2003 08:35:18 PM
you live in a beautiful and photo op rich environment :)
01/21/2003 02:52:14 PM
Tim! Congratulations! I love this photograph.

This is a great B+W photo, I wish it was mine

Congrats!!! This was my absalute favorite. I love everything about it. Good job. You just love those ribbons, don't you? ;-)
01/21/2003 12:23:05 PM
Congratulations on another ribbon Tim! Very nice landscape photo.

That's what made it for me too, Chris. The other photos I took that showed much more of the tracks placed too much emphasis on the tracks and began to compete with the interesting background. At least for this challenge topic. The image was about how the tracks and bridge complimented and supported the background.

I really love this picture so I'll make another comment... What really "makes it" for me is the level of the camera being right at the height of the rails. Don't know why, but I really like that perspective for this one!

Tim --

Overall, this is a great picture. My test of a picture is "would this photo look good on my home's walls?" Yes.

Composition.

The bridge placement in your frame is perfect in my opion. I am bothered with the clear cut in the background, but that is only being true to the present environment in this area.

The clouds sort of counter balance the whole picture nicely. It gives a fanciful aura to the scene.

Technical

The track on the left side is doing something to your picture on my LCD. I can't judge if it is my monitor or your picture that is causing this minor negative. I have seen this happen due to requirements of the lower pixel count.

Focus is perfect (in my view)!

Challenge fitness

Some people might have judged this slightly down because your picture was in portrait mode. I, myself, think that this adds interest to the overall composition.

This is a wonderful picture and a real pleasure to critique. Congratulations.

Very beautiful and atmospheric. Great composition. I think I'd like the darkest tones to be a little darker, but that's my only nitpick.

I would liked to have sseen the bridge less centered vertically, but this is great. love the black and white. the hills with the mist crawling down look great! 9

Very nice photo. I like the little clouds. Focus and lighting are great. Really meets the challenge. 8 waltoml.

Cool shot, I really like the focus on the bridge. Good job.

Wonderful shot!

Very nice picture, nasty clear cut in the background. Was there a possibility to take this from the other side of the tracks? W/O the clear cut, this is really nice, with it, a couple notches less..... 7 Swash

Great shot in grayscale..good dof and well composed..only suggestion would be that cropping out the pinetree on the right may have made it more dramatic. One of my 10's for the week.
01/15/2003 01:40:48 PM
Excellent use of cropping tool. Your bridge looks familiar.
01/15/2003 10:47:58 AM
The lines in this are near perfect, giving very strong emphasis on the center horizontal third.

A beautiful capture of scenery. I love that big ole' hill in the image as well. Also the train tracks and bridge adds interest. Excellent composition and use of B&W. Looks like a winner to me. 10 :)

I like the top 2/3 ... I really think you should have cropped a lot at the bottom. I put a piece of papen on my screen just below the track and like it a lot better. Otherwise .. in the 2/3 I llike nice grey tones and very good atmosphere. 5 (6 or more with a different framing or cropped)/. Lionel

Very nice -- looks like it could have easily been taken in my neck of Western PA!
01/14/2003 03:10:08 PM
excellent composition with the mountain in the background making one wonder where the tracks go to. i like the clear foreground and bridge and the misty mountain in the background. the tree on the left begins the journey and the trees beyond the bridge continue the journey, but to where? love it. 10

rock and roll :):):) excellent photo = 10 - setzler

addition... I REALLY like this image the more I look at it. I have this 'natural' affinity to railroads for some reason. I wonder if this particular bridge is within driving distance of me... I would love to do this one myself... great work.. :)

One of my favourites this week. Good cropping and great in b&w. The composition is perfect. I had probably made it darker but that´s just a detail. Love it and high score from me. Good Luck!

What a beautiful place. I like the levels of lanscape and the railroad bridge. I'm thinking I might like it taken closer to the left near the tracks. That's just a personal thing. Nicely done !

Whhhhhhhhhhho. Love this b&w....with fantastic DOF. This so interesting and good to look at with a good over all feeling. Nice focus and of course the compostion is super. O' yeah, like this one a bunch......Sky is a little washed out.

Terrific shot. Great contrast and good detail. Only thing I may have done differently is crop out the sky, as it's washed out. Giving it a 10, regardless.

Absolutely supurb! Everything about this photo is perfect. I love the beautiful detail in the foreground - excellent contrast. And then it just fades upwards into the clouds. Wonderful! 10

Wow this is a great black and white shot. I love the steam rising and the sun shining from behing the hill. My only suggestion would be to crop about an inch from the bottom. It is just gravel and scrub and is not really needed the rails are what creates the perspective.
