On my way home from Rochester, NY I decided to take a side trip to the Niagara Falls to see if I could come up with a fitting Landscape photo for this week's challenge. This is what I got.

Greetings from the Critique Club };-)

Initial thoughts
Easy to critique as I really like the shot, definitely meets the challenge, a bit too much sky

Composition/ Content

The thing that really scores well on DPC is the "WOW" factor and this shot has it: the rainbow, the ice and the way the light hits the falls all contributes.

Background
I don't know whether or not you tried this in landscape vs. portrait orientation. It seems like it may have worked a bit better and you could have cropped more of the sky this way. But there may be something distracting just around the falls that you worked to keep out. Really good anyway.

Camera Work - Technical
Focus is excellent for the difference in light and shadow you have here.

Digital Processing - Technical
I noticed that your comments really pointed to removing some of the sky in this shot. I was one of them and still feel that may have been the best way to improve this. It would have taken the horizon line off center and brought the top down nearer to the interesting clouds above the falls.

Fits The Challenge
Definitely fits the challenge well.

My Opinion On The Photo
I originally scored this shot a nine. I think that it meets the challenge well and the only real improvement would have been less sky. That may have led it to finish even higher than it did but the competition was really tough this week. Great job, and keep up the good work.

I would be happy to talk further about this shot if you would like to contact me.

Great composition, clarity. Light also very good.

wow!! if this doesn't get an award I will be floored very nice job ! 10

Abssolutely Stunning!
01/19/2003 01:20:52 PM
Yikes - that looks really cold. Good capture of the mood, ice, and the rainbow.
01/19/2003 12:50:51 AM
great rainbow capture.... but is this more of a waterscape pic rather than a landscape pic? anyway, I like it to much so I won\'t lower the score for that!
plus you need to enter that in the other DPC competition for cash... that would be a nice entry for this months topic!

Superb composition with the icicles in the fore, and that rainbow has come out great. Lovely shot!

Great shot, makes me cold just looking at it. Love mother nature, such a gift..
01/17/2003 06:35:26 PM
OK, I'm officially jealous. I haven't been there in 20 years, but I long to go back. Great shot because of the different interesting elements (all in focus): the rainbow, the sky, the falls, and the ice covered vegetation. Good job. ............. 10 :)

Excellent photo. Focus and lighting are excellent. Subject matter is very interesting. 9 waltoml

This is awesome, one of my favorites. Only thing I MIGHT change would be to crop just a bit of the sky out to bring the horizon line up off of center.

So much blue! It's definitely a beautiful photo, and the sky is superb. 8! -Annida

Good photo - the colours are rich and the focus is nice. I'm curious as to why you chose portrait instead of landscape though. There is a bit too much sky for my taste and landscape orientation may have pushed the horizon up to about 1/3 from the top. Otherwise though the photo is nice - the foreground is particularly interesting

You made me cry! 10!

Wow, this has some very cool (personal favorite) elements! Rainbow, frozen stuff (in the foreground no less!), water (lots of water) and a pretty sky. What's not to like? 9 Swash

I guess you might have heard this before, but I would have cropped a lot of that sky out of this image because the image is simply stunning!...Good luck!

Nice pic but makes me want to know whats outside the frame. Wider angle needed or turn the camera round. Still a great shot 9

What a beautiful sight! My suggestion would be to include just a bit more of the frozen grass and a bit less of the sky. The sky currently takes up about half of the shot. I really do like where you placed the rainbow in this shot and included the whole horseshoe fall.7.

WOW look at that rainbow. This is brilliant. I also like the snow surrounding the branches in the foreground. An excellent landscape photo, you have captured it very well.

Wonderful shot! Niagara Falls is a great place when you consider that you're almost guaranteed to see a rainbow anytime the sun is out! My only nitpick would be that the shot seems to be divided a little too much into half. May have been a little stronger without as much sky.

I like this angle!! great colors & rainbow

interesting photo, who knew you were allowed that close ! 6

This is a stunning photo.. the capture of the rainbow in this image makes everything work so well.. that is such an intriguing single element for this landscape... I think that landscapes need some specific element of 'intrigue' to make them really pop out and you have captured that nicely here... great shot ! = 10 - setzler

brrrrr looks pretty chilly there. love the rainbow.
01/14/2003 01:31:29 AM
Very captivating. Niagra with the rainbow, which is a "once in a blue moon" type of shot.
01/14/2003 01:10:13 AM
The horizon is a little too centered. Love the rainbow! Including the ice in the foreground is nice though you might have shown even more of it. Tough lighting conditions. A square crop might work as well and showcase the rainbow a little more. There's just a tad too much sky.

How long did you wait for that rainbow, or is it perpetually over the falls? I've been there, but never seen a rainbow that vividly.
01/13/2003 08:23:07 PM
Nice focus, color, and light. The composition is good too. Great work.....bravo.
01/13/2003 07:13:59 PM
Wow, that is pretty cool. How did you get so close, I thought it was restricted. Very nice. Did you get a landscape shot of this also? Like to see that.
01/13/2003 05:03:33 PM
I know the rule of thirds, but would have rated it higher if there were less sky, the subject isn't the sky. Otherwise nice capture

I think a little more crop at the top would help. Too much sky. Very pretty though!
01/13/2003 03:57:11 PM
I like the shot a lot, but think a lot of the sky could have been cropped out. Also believe it could use a bit more color saturation.

Very Nice. An interesting take on NF. 9

Nice to see a picture of the Falls that doesn't have that typical postcard composition. I thought about the Falls too, but couldn't think of a composition better than this. Bonus for the rainbow and frozen weeds. - 7

Nice composition.
01/13/2003 04:55:37 AM
Shame there is so much sky in this, but i do like it
01/13/2003 03:54:01 AM
What a great capture, love the foreground. I think a bit less sky would make the balance better but love it already!
01/13/2003 03:16:38 AM
I've never been to Niagara Falls, but this photo makes me want to go there!

Great shot, like how the foreground adds depth, and the great rainbow. Lucky you to have this area to photograph!
