Challenge: Masters' Free Study (Advanced Editing II*)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Lakes district, United Kingdom
Date: Sep 18, 2004
Aperture: f 4.9
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/45 sec
Galleries: Emotive, Landscape
Date Uploaded: Sep 30, 2004

We were tripping through the Lakes district with a friend when we had to stop to watch this awesome sunset. Our friend got out of the car to go and chase a sheep! A while later we were looking around to find where she was and saw her standing on top of this hill - I immediately grabbed my camera and this was the shot!

I have made a levels adjustment, slightly increased the saturation and made a crop which had her in the centre and lower third. I also made a selection to take some of the brightness which was distracting in the lower right of the frame.

The clouds are interesting with the many different colors. The processing just left a little bit of jaggies in the photo. Nice work still. Good Luck! 5

Lots of emotion in this shot. I think the front clouds are perhaps a little too orange - they kind of grab my attention a little too much. 7.

Great colors in the sky, not sure that the subject silhouette works well, while definable, it is barely so and is dwarfed by the magnificene of the sky....perhaps a bit too along. I think a large subject ona closer view might have worked better for me.....but the sky is dynamite.

Nice colors and silhouette, I would have off-centered the person, because it might have been stronger at conveying solitude...

Amazing capture. Composition could perhaps be made more interesting, but I see the problem, crop left and loose the salmon coloured clouds there, crop right and loose the fire coloured clouds there. I probably would have left the same though I find my eye goes straight to the middle & stops too fast there. 7.

A great sky, the rusty colour of the cloud on the left is beautiful against the blue sky. Although there is a area over the horizon (the strong cyan and yellows) on the right which hits me in the eye. -7

Where you able to pose the model? It would have been interesting to see a few other silhouettes... not that there was a lot of time though! I also wondered if you could have sacrificed some of the grandeur in the sky for a larger view of the model?

this is a wild image. unfortunately for me, i cannot really tell what that is up on that hill...is it a post, a sign, or a person? love the colors, just wish there was a little more context.

Hard to determine what the person is doing on the hill. A little more detail would be good. Also, I think you included too much of the hill. Less hill, more sky. Speaking of sky, I love it and the colors reflected on the clouds. 6

The big breast panorama. This is intriguing but the vermillion- orange poses an immeduate sense of incongruity. Is this smoke rather than clouds? Because if this orange formation is at the same level as the clouds of blue-grey sky then this can not be. For example, the transition never goes from vermillion to deep royal blue while the clouds are within close proximity. Of course fog rising can do this because it is on a differemnt plane. Another mystery is the pure yellow and cyan on the bottom right.

Certainly a strong image with the silhouette and while I will blame the pure yellow and cyan to a ps color shift, I will give the artist the benefit of the doubt about the vermillion coiuds. Bumping up.

Great color. Seems a little over-processed, though, almost posterized in the lower right corner.

Just the right side (the bright part of it) - I would've cropped it.

The silhouetted figure on the hilltop adds interest however the central location makes the image a bit static. Cropping part of the image at the right I think would add impact to it and it would remove the blown out part of the sky. 7

Unbelievable color in those clouds. The dark blue/black rain clouds next to the bright orange on a sky blue background. Simply stunning work! Definitely a feeling of solitude.

Almost surreal look, curious as to how the original compares to your presentation. Really gives the viewer the impression of solitude. Nicely done!

Voted a 5 first look, it is a great idea, but the sunset reflected on the clouds doesn't quite work in my opinion. With the huge orange cloud cropped out it would a sure winner. Solitude is a good title, but as is, it is more like isolation. I like it and cropped would hang it on my wall. Bumped to 7

Yes. It certainly looks lonely up there. Especially being lost in such a turbulent looking sky. Great job, and great capture of the sunset. 8.

WOW. The only thing I can pick out in the this picture as possibly negative is the slight pixellation on the hill, esp. to the right of the figure. Otherwise, amazing!

Is that a person or a tree? Great clouds. 5
10/04/2004 10:26:00 AM
I love the sky in this shot! The colours in the clouds are brilliant. I can see that it's a person on the top of the hill, for me it's a little small though. Still, a very nice shot! 8

Nice minimalistic approach, good to have that person as focal point. Maybe even more balanced without the red clouds in front, but I realise you can't just blown them away, have to catch the moment.

beautiful cloud formations gave this photo lots of interesting textures in the sky. The person on top of the hill is a significant element of the composition. Well-done. I really like the image. 8

The colors in this shot are wonderful, the orange and reds and yellows but the clouds on the right seem over saturated and the person (? can't really tell) on top of the hill gets lost in the shot. A beautiful shot but not overall captivating, sorry a 6

Strong points: a) The sky is total wow. b) Exposure is perfect c) Colors and black silhoouettes couldn't be better. Suggestions for improvement: a) The figure at the top of the mound is dead center - may be stronger if the camera was moved a bit to the left (although it's still excellent in this formal presentation.) b) May be just a bit too much base - but I would not take off more than 1/3 of the dark area.

What a great moment to capture...and a striking sunset (rise? heh)... at first I was confused...is that a tree, a person, is this an anthill, is that a twig ahaha, but then I just decided it's a person breathing in the day, much more satisfying for me that way. Very nice! Thanks!

This is ok but it may be a bit dramatic. The sky on the left, the red clouds looks overly fake. The yellow on the right looks digital as well.

I like the idea of this shot, but it seems incomplete. I think the sky is distracting me (the colours seem a little over the top) and the silhouetted hill isn't enough to look at.

Lots of drama here. The lovely colors and sillhouette work well together here. I do think the figure might be better just a little to the right to balance things out more, but a lovely photo. 8

The layering of the clouds and color contrast is excellent, to focus the eye more on that I'd crop the bottom right up to the base of the hill

A very well captured sky here I can't help but think it would have been better made use of if you could have chosen something else to go with it than a small hill.

Mystical and maybe little haunting. Nice array of colors and cloud patterns.

Gorgeous colours, it's a shame that the figure on the hill isn't clear enough. The silhouettes look oversharpened. I think the figure is looking to the left, I would have prefered them further to the right looking into the frame. Centered doesn't quite work for me. Great atmosphere evoked here though. 6

Looks to me to be a special place where heaven touches earth. Really like the contrasts here of color and how the luminance of the sky is brough out even more with the silhouette and low-key tonality of the image in general. I do wish the hill had some undulating shapes for variation and I would have also liked to have seen the person standing off center. Other than that, a very dramatic image. Well done. 8

This is an excellent photo. I really love the way the foremost clouds look. The composition would be cooler if you didn't see the side view of the person, maybe if his arms were outstretched in a V shape or something, of course it was probably a candid shot. 7

10/01/2004 03:14:39 PM
Interesting shot... the subject is difficult to make out here, and, while you can tell that it's a person, there's little emotional connotation to go with the title. The colors are oversaturated, and the contrast seems blown out in the lower right, while the image remains grainy in the upper left. The cloud effects are impressive, and the bright red color in the smoke to the left side of the frame is very striking.
10/01/2004 02:24:35 PM
sunsets might be cliche, but I love them, and this is a great shot - brightest highlights are overexposed, but the near clouds are unique and obviously make the shot

(just entered a comment and computer went crazy ... hope this doesn't post twice)

It's awesome. My only nit pick would be the pose of the model ... it's hard to tell what she's doing (dancing, lifting a foot) as i only see one leg. ... 9

Perhaps a closer crop would have helped a little. I don't like that I can see where the land around the hill levels out. (personal taste, I admit), and the silhouette of the figure would probably be stronger if it were larger.
