|On Saturday, I spend much of the day trying to get shots for this challenge. Then I realized that the Memorial Union Terrace at the UW just re-opened after a bunch of constructions. So I set an alarm Sunday morning to get up at 5am (my wife called me crazy), as I wanted the pre-sunrise light.
I made it up, out the door, and to the location about 10 minutes before the sun started to peak. I grabbed three chairs and set them up. Then proceeded to spend the next 45 minutes photographing the three chairs. I first I had them facing me, which was ok. Then away, again ok. then I added the water on the concrete for a more interesting scene. Bingo, there is the shot.
I am very likely going to print this out big, and hang it on my wall. I think it's an amazing display of art. Hard to say what the voters will think. I think of fine art as being something I would hang on my wall. Many seem to think it must be strange or quirky.
To get this exposure, I used a Grad ND 4 and a Grad ND 8 filter, which kept the sky from blowing out while getting more light on the chairs. The filters were slightly tilted to the right, to even out the sky, as the sun was starting to rise at this point, creating an unnatural gradient across the sky when I left the filters flat.
Interestingly, this is the second straight entry of mine shot at f/22. Normally I don't like shooting with such a tiny aperture, but in these two cases, it worked out fine.
