Challenge: Stranger In A Strange Land (Classic Editing)
Collection: Challenge Entries
Camera: Canon PowerShot S40
Location: Paris, France
Date: Dec 31, 2002
Aperture: F2.8
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/500th
Galleries: Cityscape, Travel
Date Uploaded: Jan 4, 2003

One of the many many gargoyles adorning the Notre Dame cathedral in the centre of Paris, taken through the fencing so that the creature is framed against the parisien skyline (the golden dome is Les Invalides, the other thing is the Eiffel Tower ;o)

The shot was rotated, cropped, hue&sat set to auto, contrast to auto, increased saturation, focus tweaked and double bordered.

Great photo - love it!

INITIAL RESPONSE : Paris !Nice gargoyle detached from background, horizon line feel a little too close to the middle for my tastes.

COMPOSITION; I like the balance between the 2 main 'subject' the gargoyle and the Eiffel tower. They kind of response to each other.

Very good Depth of field. it separate the gargoyle from the background but still giving nice details ( the building, the cars) without them 'invading' the subject.

The horizon line is a little too much in the middle, when I remove a little bit of sky at the top , I think it's better.

Day was not sunny I wonder how it would have looked a sunny/bright day. But that's one of the 'real Paris'.

BACKGROUND : see above. nice tones of brown/beige. Enough out of focus/enough in focus .. very good.

DIGITAL : No sign of any digital processing => perfect!

MY OPINION:
Being french and lived in paris for 15 years .. the gargoyles are something 'special' on Notre Dame, something unusual on an unusual building. Meet the challenge perfectly!

I like A LOT the way the gargoyle is detached from the back ground and the balance with the eiffel tower.
Very well done ! And very good correlation to the challenge theme !

Oh that is wicked!!! Very cool. And, I've taken a picture of these same "gargoyles" or whatever they are, on a boat ride on the Seine River in 1988. :)

This is one of my favorites so far this week. What a great location for a cityscape. If I were you, I'd go back and shoot this again on a sunny day, blue sky with clouds! Thanks for the fun image! 8

This is an attention getter, that's for sure. Is the gargoyle a part of a building or something you sat there to take a photo of the city behind it. I know there are some really neat ones on a lot of buildings. Great photo. PTL

What can I say... my fav pick of the challenge! I'm usually not too keen on cloudy skys but it fits the them perfectly. Of course cropping is by the traditional rule of 3rds and your eye just kinda sneek off to the Eiffel Tower in the back ground. SUPERB!

The colors looks a bit muddied here. I wonder if the water always looks like that, and if a level adjustment could have made it look less muddy. To show you what I'm talking about, I wanted to send you these links to a couple photos I've critiqued in the past. I will say the same thing about your shot that I did the other, I think it would look better in black and white. Here is a link to a color version of this shot... //www1.photosig.com/viewphoto.php?id=364242 and here is a link to a black and white... //www1.photosig.com/viewphoto.php?id=428152.
Just wanted to share those with you.
Also, I think your shot could use a slight rotation to the right. Otherwise, very nice. Good luck in the challenge.

excellent sharp foreground, still retains good DOF, and the eiffel in the bg is the capper that adds the exotic context that nails the shot : )
