Common name Witch's Hat; Conical Waxy Cap.
Edibility - not recommended - I am posting more shots just for identification purposes.

It used to be thought it was poisonous but that opinion doesn't hold true anymore. There were 4 deaths in China but the general consensus is the mushroom was incorrectly identified.

It's not recommended that you eat it but people have (chef Larry Stickney of the Mycologial Society of SF) and stated he felt lightheaded and experienced numbness.

Why anyone would want to eat such a skinny little mushroom that turns black soon after picking is beyond me.

Please remember that I am not a mycologist and any identifications I make should not be considered accurate for the purposes of consumption. It's a hobby I enjoy and share with my husband who has been identifying mushrooms for 25 years.

I only add the info I do for people who enjoy hunting mushrooms and might like to share their photos with me.

That's some amazing detail you captured. Love how they are huddled together.

They are pretty little mushrooms (I definitely wouldn't be tempted to eat them) and very nicely photographed against the darkness.

Say, Maggie, you have an impressive image here.
Full of visual impact and great colors.
I'll look forward to more of these.

Very nice.
I love mushrooms - know next to nothing about them, will eat the 3 types I know, but love looking at them and I think it must be fun taking pics of them.

Very nice, all of them. Interesting shapes, textures, play of light - and information.

Thanks for all the comments - I would have much preferred not use the flash but I am trying to discipline myself to hold to a photo a week - I used my 580exll flash, was on the hot shoe because of the difficult terrain and walking. In retrospect I should have taken if off as you suggested Ann and tried different lighting angles or more diffusion as HarveyG also suggested.

bsluijk it is small - it's a fairly tiny mushroom, especially when it is the orange color - as it grows it changes color to more of a greenish hue. It has a viscous top so usually leaves and such stick to it and you can miss it as it blends into the forest. There are thousands (two thousand plus identified in books on mycology that give information on fungi in my region) of species just where I live so I was going to try and do one a week and properly identify them (with the help of my husband.

Good stuff. I especially like the shot of the underside.

What are you using for the flash? I'm wondering whether it might improve things to get the flash off the camera, and shoot with the flash at different angles. I'd also be tempted to use a larger diffuser, maybe shoot the flash through a cheap white umbrella.

Nice texture on the smaller one in front. I also like the composition. It looks small!

Not bad for having to use a flash. Amazing the difference in fungi. Nicely done.

Nice compo and dark BG. Flash could use more diffusion? Any reason for the red hot pixel at 1 O'clock? Check your sensor...if a new camera you might want to take it back...

Congrats on the camera. Just got mine not long ago too and I'm loving the option of using iso higher than 400 (just need to get some lenses and a flash now).

That is really a wonderful image. The detail and colour is superb. I quite like your other shots too. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you can produce with your new toy.
