This shows a newer growth of the Hygrocybe conica - common name Witch's Hat; Conical Waxy Cap - it does not stay this color. As it matures it turns greenish like the other photos show.

It used to be thought it was poisonous but that opinion doesn't hold true anymore. There were 4 deaths in China blamed on this mushroom but the general consensus is the mushroom was incorrectly identified.

It's not recommended that you eat it but people have (chef Larry Stickney of the Mycologial Society of SF) and stated he felt lightheaded and experienced numbness.

Why anyone would want to eat such a skinny little mushroom that turns black soon after picking is beyond me.

Please remember that I am not a mycologist and any identifications I make should not be considered accurate for the purposes of consumption. It's a hobby I enjoy and share with my husband who has been identifying mushrooms for 25 years.

I only add the info I do for people who enjoy hunting mushrooms and might like to share their photos with me.

Lol mariuca - I would eat it with a straw as it turns black and slimy and I wouldn't want to look at it (grin)

Oh, I knew about this beauty since it's suited so well for drawings, esp with some lovely polkadots. Do you try their poisonous capability with a silver spoon or fork?
