Wonderful shot! You can see her vulnerablity, yet strength and independant spirit. Very good work!

This makes me think of a recent yoga class where the instructor reminded us that to retain our independence when we get "old", we need to put in the effort now. This scene really drives that point home. Great work again sir!

This is a wonderfully expressive and tasteful study of age and the struggle to maintain a life. The mono editing is perfect for this. Congratulations on the win....My top pick for sure.

This is such a wonderful shot -- even better because my own mother is struggling with losing her independence. Beautifully scene, beautifully captured, and an incredible story. Huge congrats on the red!

Immediately transported into the image, to become the story. Brilliant, as always. Thanks.

Old age becomes a lesson like no other education. The joy of independence far outweighs the work involved to maintain it (for those individuals fortunate enough to have it!) Alas, neglect of the elderly runs rampant in a world that passes by and becomes metered by the swift clicks of technology. When life can no longer be measured and trafficked by streams of bits...What happens then? Thank you for this image and reminder, John.

Congrats on your ribbon...although disguised in red, carries all the spirit of true blue...;-)

You get a sense of the weight you must bare to be independent -- as well as a bit of a lonely mood. Well captured, and congratulations on the ribbon.

This is almost exactly the shot I wanted to do for this challenge, but didn't get around to taking it. So clearly I like the concept. The lighting and processing also are on a different level than your competition. Based on the entries I've seen so far, it would be SHOCKING if this did not ribbon! Very well done. For the technical details as well as the emotion...I'm giving this a perfect 10

Giving this my second highest vote.
There's another entry I think is vastly superior to this one. That being said, this stand alone here. If the street was a little longer to further give the feeling of isolation it would have made this slightly better.

Nicely done. The deep blacks on the right of the image really reflect the body position nicely.

This is such an amazing photo. Out of the ones in this challenge, this has the most impact for me. I can see the actual struggle to stay independent and not having to rely on social services or relatives, or even being forced to leave a loved home and move to a nursing home. I hold this higher than the countless flags, parades or fireworks in this challenge - simply because this is an actual on-going struggle for a lot of people, and not something that took place several hundred of years ago.

I had decided not to vote in this challenge (due to how I feel about said flags and fireworks), but I think I have to anyway, just so I can give this the score it deserves. 10!
