Saturday was the first sunny day in what seems like weeks of cold and rainy weather. My son and I took a nap in the afternoon and then ran out to catch the sunset. We took the scooter to a place by the lake that I had scoped out a couple of months ago, but the view was obstructed by construction and the guard wouldn't let us through to a clear spot. So we moved on up the shoreline and worked the shot until I found the perfect spot ... which was already occupied by a local photographer who has lived here for 60 years and had been camping out for the shot both in the morning and the afternoon. I complimented him on his keen eye for landscape and so his wife let me squeeze in for this shot (more likely because she thought my son was so cute and well behaved ... at that particular moment).

The view is of the SIP district on the west-side of Jinji Lake, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, People's Republic of China. The unfinished "Gate of China" skyscraper is to the right in background. The next-tallest buildings, to the left, are the twin Fraser Suites, although you can only really see one of them as they are aligned from this viewpoint. As usual, credit to my wife for the fitting title.

Processing: HDR image comprising 5 exposures. Exposure and gamma adjustment. Cloned out sensor dust (my camera needs a cleaning). A touch of Noise Ninja and unsharp mask. Added watermark. No crop.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

This is such a lovely shot. So quiet and serene, the fisherman with his cormorants, the sun and its reflection offering the only colour in a naturally desaturated capture. They balance beautifully against the willow(?) branches on the right framing the awkward skyscrapers leaning towards each other. The contrast of old and new is very powerful here so I am not surprised you finished just out of the top 10 in this challenge. Very well-seen shot and so glad that other photographer made room for you! Your son must have been very well behaved! :-) The pp you did is virtually invisible, good work.

Gorgeous work, please keep shooting and entering what you like. Just be careful, no watermarks or copyrights are allowed on any entries and may lead to a disqualification on that basis alone.

Feel free to PM me,

Susan

I'd rather look at this one than any other picture in the challenge - including my own. Beautiful.

Sooo close to Top Ten. Yet still... nothing to be ashamed of with this wonderful image!

Somewhat reminiscent of Claude Monet's "Impression Sunset". Interesting shot.

Beautiful capture. The old and new juxtaposition.

Those details are stunning, and you have nicely grayed out the whole image. Stunning work.

One of my favourite top three shots. I like the juxtaposition of old vs new, I like the foreground framing by the branches. I gave it a 8 but maybe I should have given it the 9 or 10 and not let the horizon bother me in a narrow minded fashion.

I really like how the sun adds that nice touch of color.

Really a nice sense of calm. Love the birds on his boat.

It would look better without the branch, nice take on the challenge

Great contrast of simple life vs big city. Tree branches take away from this image slightly in my opinion. still well done. Love the colours of the sun reflection in the water as the contrast to the 'dismal city' look.
