Some parts of the country already had their foliage.

I was in Maine in early October for that reason. I could have used my photos for this challenge now I cannot :(

NOw I am going to pray a hail mary so that my Red Maple tree changes color before the month ends.. :(

(which never happens in Houston)

well grab some spray paint, you have lotsa time to cover the entire tree :)

I would only want to have this site be seen with the international enormity that it became to measure! Not the regional US perspective it started with.

Coppied from my post in the other foliage thread;

I dont feel like repeating my self other than the fact that because the planet is so diverse and there seems to be so many people offended with this Foliage challenge then I vote that there be NO challenges other than self portraits. I THINK everyone can do those, if not then we will have to find something that EVERYONE can shoot no matter where they are on the planet.

Other than that almost every challenge excludes someone on this planet so its not fair to them. Just trying to be politically correct and all...

And NO Landscapes are not safe either, what about the poor buggers working on cruise ships, or if my company feels the need to send me to an offshore oil rig. If a landscape challenge popped up then I would be pretty ticked off being surrounded with nothing but water and no way to shoehorn that in...

I wonder, what would you have said if you had an AZ instead of the VA for a state?

I'm in Southern California. Just about everything is green, I'm sure I'll find something, but LA/OC does not get spectacular fall color. However, I agree with Wendy. It's an extra contest, and not every topic is available to everyone. Try telling my wife I need to shoot a nude female model for the nude challenge! ;)

In the “Foliage” case it’s not only the southern hemisphere we have to apologies to, it’s the equatorial belt around the globe, both poles and all the arid and semiarid regions and almost all seas’ islands. So I say change this contest into “seasons” and have all wanting participate.

You didn't seem to gripe too much about the Rural Landscapes challenge.....8>)

I'd say that was a fine workaround.

Winter, snow, surf, lanscape, nudes, sky, auroras......someone's always going to have an advantage......

I cannot honestly believe, especially after your Rural ribbon, that you of all people wouldn't be sympathetic to the fact that challenges are NOT going to be all things to all people all the time.

my point exactly. The nude challenge wasn't one that I could enter unless I did a self-portrait (which believe me, you don't want to see!). I was a little sad that I couldn't enter it, but not everything is available to everyone. It's an extra challenge. (I also didn't have the skills for the expert editing challenge.) Also, I've noticed there have been master's challenges, in the past. So I realize I'm not going to be able to enter every challenge.

For the nude Challenge I found that if you drink a LOT it makes the self portrait sound much better in your head at that given time...

I like the idea that this site might develop a much more international outlook. That would be great.

What if there were 4 challenges every year, to be shot outdoors by natural light. The shooting period for each would be 3 months. I would like a challenge once in a while that gave me more than one week & that I could plan ahead for. It would improve the quality, probably. Voting would be more fun as I would look forward to seeing what's going on in the rest of the world.

The challenge could still be announced with one week to go, same as always. At first we would be going thru old shots looking for gold. But it wouldn't take long to learn to plan ahead.

Thanks for pointing that out. But it's a Free Study. And it's only one month.

But if you don't like my idea, what would you propose to make this site have a more international personality?

A your corner of the world challenge......Oh yea. ......:)

Not to sound negative or anything but I just don't think that ANY site can truly be completely international, no matter what someone, some where will not be able to shoot for the odd challenge unless we just get rid of specific topics and just make it nothing but free studies. Even with that Im sure someone would get on here and b!tch about that.... just say'n

Dear god will someone please pass the tissues to the whiners on this thread. Perhaps even a pacifier or two would help.

One would be foolish to expect a site whose owner resides in the US to not have some regionalcentricity. I've only been on the site a few years but I've seen the owner bend over backwards to try and make the site more world centric. Maybe we should all stand back and look at our extreme good fortune to be able to afford a camera, computer, and internet access at all. We're probably in the top 99th percentile of people in the world with respect to wealth. How do we include the rest? Participate in the challenges and educate people with our work and art. I've seen you do this with your work Tareq. What's different now? Good luck.

haha nice try MattO. There are lots of challenges here that appeal to everyone everywhere, & some challenges that are for the lucky ones, but nothing that promotes international participation or takes into account the huge variety in the USA.

Besides the Free Study, I would like to see 4 challenges per year, to be shot outdoors by natural light (sun or moon), with a 3-month shooting period. If the challenge also asked (optionally) for GPS coordinates, that would be fun.

Yea, but some of us would have to stay wasted thru the entire submission and voting process. We could go through de-tox after the challenge was over.

If you vote on the nude challenge after drinking, it quickly becomes a game of "Would Ya?"

No Fall colors here in NZ, But even I was still back in Wisconsin it would be about the same The fall colors have already been and gone. I think this challenge was just too late for alot of people and perhaps not useful to others. I don't mind however, I got alot of posible entries for all the other challenges listed and that is where I will focus my attention.

ETA: My prediction is, There will be more Fall Color photos in the Corner of the World Challenge than in the actual Fall challenge.

And, it is each and every month, so you can plan and take your time shooting. If you want to shoot landscapes, have at it. You said you would like one once and a while and I was just pointing out that if you so chose, you could do it every month.

My suggestion? If you want the site to have more international personality, submit international shots into each and almost every challenge we have. The past 12 challenges (at least -- that is as far as I counted) could be "international" simply because they were so broad in appeal and possibilities.

You lot just need something to gripe about!

Was out and about yesterday at one of the best gardens in UK for research and works hand in glove with BHS(British Horticultural Society) and what did they have as a display???

Go on, ask me??

Bloody Pumpkins, two weeks too early for Halloween Challenge that is bound to come up at the end of the month. Am I whining or crying? You Bet!!

I must have an advantage. My Zoo spans almost 19,000 square km's and has 6 ecosystems and near enough 2,000 plant species.
I can drive around in it in my own car and there are no metal bars or McDonald's Drive-Thru's.
The odd Elephant or Giraffe turns up eating said plant species foliage. Heaven!

Beats seeing a bear in his natural habitat - a Studebaker.

Let the whining begin! :)
