HERE is the only photo I took last week that had any 'photojournalistic' qualities aobut it. I did not submit it because i felt it did not tell a decent story... the story that it does tell is only meaningful to me... it would be grossly misunderstood.... :)

I would have assumed there was a good story behind it, and would have rated it highly. My only gripe is that there seems to be an appreciable amount of grain in it, at least on my monitor.

As a side note, I have to admit that I've been disappointed that you haven't been submitting for several weeks, John... I always look forward to seeing which submission is yours, and we all tend to learn from you!

I suppose that's another 'problem'. I shot it at iso 400 intentionally to add that grain.

I like that photo john.

My outtakes are HERE!

Be warned, if you are very observant and clever you might be able to figure out which entry is mine from these.

It's just simply a matter that in this case, there appears to be more grain than I would prefer. For example, the counter on the right hand side is quite speckled with a wide range of colors -- I'd prefer it to be depicted as its "true" color. I would say that I don't like to see much grain in a color shot -- I think overall it's more effective for B&W shots. But that's just me...

I just noticed that you do, in fact, have B&W versions of this scene in your gallery -- and I like them better. I think the grain is a perfect choice for these.

I do prefer your sepia version John :)

The grain is not a problem for me. However, I would like to see a version with the bright centered light either dulled a little, or turned off. I think it grabs my eye too much / often as I look around the photo.
BTW, it looks like a great "general store" to poke around in.

I originally liked the bw/sepia version too but the warmth of the color version impressed me more...

With all of the wood and warm light, I think that shot works great in color.

Should have taken it with a normal ISO and added the grain afterwards John... mm, great idea :P

That's possible, but I don't particularly like adding grain. I can't add it in the same way the camera does it on its own.

There is a fine line for me when it comes to grain. In most cases where it has been added manually, IMO, it is too much grain... I haven't seen it done effectively very often... There are probalby some, but I think minimal grain is best in most cases...

I think you should have entered that shot, John. I would have rated it pretty high myself. I think I would have cropped it slightly tighter to eliminate the person's arm or whatever that is on the left side. I find it distracting. I don't mind the brightness of the light or the grain. I prefer the color version much better because the warm colors really add to it. As for the story, I don't mind making that up myself.
