Stand by all, I'm uploading to Pbase as I type this, should be "live" in a little bit... It's a 7.1MB upload, and I'm on a hotel wireless network, LOL.

edit:
So I'm driving from LA to Phoenix today, scored a mediocre shot for "lines" then dawdled enough that I got to the hotel at 11:40 server time, and had to try and check in, get to the room, fire up the laptop, connect, edit, save and submit in less than 20 minutes. Made it with about a minute to spare, and... I'm scoring 5.4, LOL.

Better than me with my 4.9! :) I used some of the tricks you showed me. Perhaps I should have left it alone though... it was pretty as is, but I messed with it. Oops.

Mine are up!

Edit:
These are the 33 images that I edited last night, I still have two or three panos to edit, and those won't get done until I'm back home and can work on a bigger monitor.

Brian, you have some great shots in there! I really love number 4 and number 5 (the bee). It's hard to pick faves they're all damn good.

Sorry I have taken so long to respond, after my comute back north and then straight to work I'm wiped out. I have mustered up a little energy and posted a few of my shots Brian you have taken some stunning shots,I really like your shot of the bee. Mr. kirbic what can I say I am in awe and admiration of your talent, wonderful shots. Once again I would like to say what a pleasure it was to meet each one of you. My son Cameron really had a wonderful time and asked me after seeing some of the different shots of himself posted by each of you"Dad, does this mean I'm A famous person now?"thank you for making it such a special day for him. ps-kirbic It looks like we were both standing in the same area when we took a shot of the artist painting, amazing. Every one of you guys took some beautiful pics. I will post some more tomorrow.ddyjr.deviantart.com

thanks for the opionions all! glad you liked them :)

tom: thanks very much for the detailed comments as well - i noticed something about the eyes on that lizard shot too but wasn't sure what it was.. i thought perhaps the focus, but i'll give the dodging a try a little bit later. the first one i just sort of liked cuz it was a mesh of color, which was a little more difficult to obtain when everything was in focus. the yellow with the orange flowers in the background took me awhile to get - i was laying down trying to get that in one of the fields beside the road.. wind was being pesky though.. (btw, i changed my profile pic to your shot!)

arie: i just shot at iso400 with white balance in aperture priority.. a lot of them didn't really show their best qualities until some shadow/highlight and sometimes even saturation + levels work. 4/20 is a good example of this, as is 19/20, which were initially very blandly colored. if you do shadow/highlight work, make sure to check the more options box so that you can not only play with the % feature but the tonal width as well.

fritz: great shots! i love the detail in the pistils of 9557 and your hillside landscape 9597 is also great. the closeups of the insects/reptiles are also quite detailed!

don: just saw your post, think i was typing mine when yours went up. very cool shots as well - i really like your bee shot as the focus, composition, and colors are all spot on. the other shot with the same title is curiously appealing as well - i haven't figured out why, but i think it has something to do with the cross between the fine detail of the 'hair' on the white flower stems, mixed with the mesh of colors around them.

All of your photos are so impressive! I feel that I really am lacking as a photographer, but I am truly inspired! So, thank you very much :)

I have narrowed my photos down to 115 of which I want to post / edit. I hope to only put up 50-75, but it's so hard to chose! My biggest regret is not getting enough macros and also not opening my aperature more. I held out at f11 and f8 most of the day (to get scenery) and just forgot to switch. You'll see soon though. I should have my photos up by Tuesday night. I am doing a project tomorrow night or I'd post then.

I'll also try to comment in detail tomorrow (while at work). For now, it's bedtime :)

Great photo's everyone, how interesting as i look through your photos and even though we went to the same place they all have their own quality to them. Execellent macros i can only wish to get a lens soon

Fritz: I think you should make the lizard whisperer part of your sig :). Great macros of the lizard and snake. I think you should put that in your DPC portfolio, no one was crazy enough to get as close as you did to that rattler.

Brian: great photos, nice close up of the bus bee(thing was huge), for shooting at 400iso they dont look that grainy. I love that photo shoot of a photo shoot.

Don: so how manys times has your son asked if he can have a camera :)? great shots btw, Glad to see some great shoots from that nice lens.

Arie:Thats a lot of editing to do good luck with that :)

Overall you guys have giving some great ideas and angles to try out and differet settings to use. Thank You. Sorry i haven't a website up yet been working on a layout along with tons of other things, hopefully within the next month I can get it up and running.

I agree with Raul, we were all in the same areas and each of us has unique shots.

Brian, those are some great shots! I like the one of the bee.

Fritz, gotta love the lizard

Don, I am still drooling from that lens.

I tried to add comments to your photos on your site, but the site wouldn't take them for some reason... so here you go (in order):
1. Interesting effect, but I would like to see something in focus in the foreground.
2. beautiful color, highlights a bit strong, focus could be a tad shaper on more of the flowers/stem. very nice composition
3. beautiful bokeh effect, nice composition & color.
4. brilliant color & composition!
5. amazing shot! Jacko would be jealous since most of his close ups are in the process of defrosting and yours was in flight! Truly a great photo. Put this one up at dpcprints!!! I think it would sell. Clone the top left corner a little to spread the yellow or green to that purple spot that draws in your eye.
6. Great composition, unique idea, nice lighting. I would add a little more gradient or color enhancement to really make this photo stand out!
9. brilliant color! I love how in-focus but soft this one is!
10. a snipit of my lines challenge :) I really liked all the various paths you could see!
11. Nice contrast! I took this photo and it didn't come out so clear! Great job!
14. Really fun shot of Cameron :) A tiny bit overexposed. Maybe darken a teeny bit or add a little contrast.
15. Haha! I didn't realize it was a true model shoot here! Wow, my shirt stands out against the yellow so brilliantly. Glad I wore red. This photo is kinda fun :) heehee
16. I love this photo! I love the colors, the composition and the overall feel. Excellent job!
18. I like the focus a lot! I would like to see a little more cyan in this photo I think. It's a bit too red in my opin. Great composition!
20. Awe!!! so cute!

i just finished editing.. some came out good, and some not as great. here are a selection of pictures, including all the ones that i took which had DPCers (sorry, didn't get a lot of those).

here they are

pllleeeasse let me know if you would change anything about them (unnatural colors, bad tones, color cast, composition, cropping, position, over/undersharpened, anything!), as i'm always trying to learn (i notice that i will like one picture and see nothing wrong with it.. then edit it, and then think it looks 10x better.. so i'm sure that a lot of these could still use a ton of improvement that i may be missing). raw adjustments on pretty much everything, including some shadow/highlight work on some (especially the jpegs i had of the lizard).

let me know if you guys want any larger versions, i just didn't want to post the huge files to that album cuz it would take forever to upload and view.

I just finished posting comments in your respective galleries! Great work everyone. I am really impressed. We have a great group here! I can't wait til the next get together :)

Wow, I am very jealous that I could not make it that day. I will get out there soon but not sure when. I'll be in Pasadena this weekend so maybe I'll take a drive out there myself and try to get similar shots. You guys really insipred me to get off my lazy butt. :)

wow arie, thanks so much for alllll those comments! i would've been happy with 1 or 2, but that's really a lot. here are some of my responses ;P

4/11. i actually had to boost the colors a lot in these, which i did both in raw adjustments and with shadow/highlight later on. i'm not at home now, but if i think of it i can upload the original.. they were actually quite dull to begin with, shots that i may have deleted otherwise. unfortunately i forgot that the resize action i made a long time ago saves the files too, so i accidentally saved over allll my shots that i uploaded (luckily i kept the raw to a few of my favorites, but most are at 640x427 now :[ ).

10. i almost entered that too! (but never got around to it)

otherwise, i definitely see the points you made about the other photos. cameron's shoes do appear a bit hot/overexposed, and i also wish that 2 was a bit sharper - are the highlights you're referring to the yellows? and what do you mean by gradient for 6?

mark: thanks for the comment on pbuzz too :)
03/14/2005 02:44:40 PM · #90
Yes, the yellow had some bright spots... nothing bad. You may be able to fix it actually!
As for gradient, Fritz showed me how to use quickmask by pressing Q while you are in PS and then using the gradient tool to drag the selection of the area you want, then you use the Q again and it selects it. You then inverse it, using paint of black or white to add some ND feel to your photos! I have been playing with this since Saturday night :)

Thanks Arie for the comments, I will be posting more later, when I get done editing.
03/14/2005 03:15:01 PM · #92
hmm, the seemed okay to me but i should maybe check them out on a couple friends' monitors, or maybe i just like overly bright colors! either way, i'll probably give it a shot later.

as for the gradient, i'll have to check that out later when i get the time - sounds very interesting.. i'm wondering if you can do a soft focus on a separate layer and then apply a gradient to give an illusion of shallow DOF.

You very likely could!

I first want to say that everyone photos are awesome!

If anyone is interested in going back in April I think I would like to go again!

What a great time we had.

Here are some of my photos

great shots eric.. nice landscapes, and the focus in the butterfly shot is so perfect, despite the fact that it's not parallel with the lens.. very nice work!

To everyone who has posted photos, is it alright for me to share them with a friend of mine? I'm trying to show her what we do as a group and maybe get her to join us one day. She has expressed interest but I just want to demonstrate that we actually do go out and shoot photos! :)
