Sandman,
As far as the Tokina 24-200 goes, I heard it's optically ok but built like a tank and is heavy. They have a 40-50 rebate on it right now. The Sigma has two 28-300 lens. The new one is better and about $250. Popular photography has reviews of both of them online so check it out. Out of the two Tokina's range would be better due to 1.5X magnification in my view. I personally think 18-200 (28-300 in 35mm format) coming out from Tamron and Sigma will be a better range as that gives you an actual wide to mid to tele range instead of mid to tele like the old ones. Plus they are made with Digital SLR's in mind. They will cost about $150 more. I'd doubt that either would be optically better than comparable lens that go from let's say 15-50 and 50-200 mm but it is much more convinent and more cost effective. I thought about the 18-200 as well, but since I've covered that focal length, I'm going to focus on getting a ultra wide lens, most likely the Tokina 12-24 and then stop buying lenses for a while.

Beautiful photos! What lenses are you using, if you don't mind telling me? :)

Thanks Yido, I think i'll wait on the Tamron then :). Ya that tokina sounds like a nice wide-angle.

Sandman, I'll have a Tokina 24-200 with me on Saturday, if you'd care to have a look. At the moment it has a polarizer more or less permanently attached but, still, you can get an idea.

Arie,
Do we have a car in mind for the trip? I can drive my Crown Victoria if needed. It's big and comfy and will seat 5 easily.

sfalice, How do you like the Tokina 24-200. I'm thinking about buying the new Tokina 12-24 when it comes out. Do you like their product(s) so far?

I like the Tokina products. Before going digital, I had a Nikon film outfit, and used a Tokina 19-35mm with great success. They are built well and I was pleased with the results then and now with the 24-200 for Canon. It is heavy.

But I've just had the chance to look at a Canon 10-22mm lens and I'm salivating over that wide angle. Unfortunately, it is $$$s.

Maybe someday...

Alice, I'm in the same boat. Sigma has a 10-22 coming out, probably in the upper $600's, Tamron has a 11-18 coming out at $569, and Tokina has a 12-24 coming out at $499. I'm going for the Tokina.

There are only 4 of us going from Glendale. So, I figured I'd drive. I don't mind and my car is really good on gas :)

Arie,
Sounds good with me.
Too bad we've no super wide angle to try out.

Great to hear from you Ram21 :) See you there!!!!

No worries Tom, we'll be sure to go to the other open space preserves in May so perhaps you will have your lens by then or we'll find someone else to go with us who does have one!

i might be interested, depending on how much work i get done before the weekend (finals are coming up quickly). i live in westwood - is hollywood on the way or out of the way when going to the poppy fields? i'm not sure if i'm in yet, but it sounds like fun. will 9am allow enough time before the sun gets overhead and makes everything harsh and ugly again?

Arie,
Good news, I arrive in LA tomorrow, March 10! I have appointments on the 11th, should finish by 3:00 PM, then I'm free for the weekend. I'd love to join y'all on the trip to the poppy fields.

Brian,

9am is when the visitor's center opens, and since I've never been there... i thought it would be good to meet up there and learn where to go.

I believe we are taking the 5 freeway all the way up, but if you want to leave your car at a friend's in north hollywood or studio city, we could swing by and get you maybe. Or you could meet me in Glendale. I can give you directions... let me know :) I hope you can join us!

Yay, Fritz!!! I am so glad you are joining us!

If anyone is carpooling, PM me today so that I can send you directions to my apartment. You can park on the street :)

I told Arie that I cannot make it to the poppy fields for now, at least. Kind of a long story but if things don't go as planned on Saturday, I'll call someone, either Arie or Eric, and meet you guys out there early afternoon.

Eric, I'll also bring your "new" battery charger. :)

Greg, I don't want to see you Saturday ;)

Haha. I hope you have a fun day and we'll see you in April for Anza for sure :)

Anybody interested in visiting the EXOTIC FELINE BREEDING COMPOUND (no it's not like the bunny ranch in Las Vegas for those other kinda females hmmmm)after our poppy excursion. I've been there a few times and you can get pretty close to the animals it's well worth the few bucks to get in. It will be in the same area we will all be in and we can knock both out in one day and all be home in time for dinner. Keep your options open I will post more details later or just look up EXOTIC FELINE BREEDING COMPOUND in the city of rosmond for more details on a web search.

Arie,
I will see you at your place in the morning, but I need to get back by about 3PM. If more time than that is planned, I'll just drive my car and follow you there and drive back on my own.

As for the Tokina 12-24, it got very good reviews on the new issue of Popular Photography, so I ordered it. We'll have to try it out when it gets delivered, as it hasn't been shipped from Tokina to the dealers yet. Hopefully, it will be delivered soon.

Looks like they have a wide range of cats, Arie you're a cat person what do ya say? I'm up for it if everyone else in the carpool is, also if i have any shots left on the CF card of course. Looks like it would be fun to check it out.

Thanks for the info Donald.
