There are some pretty amazing images in all of those ribbons! I just need one ribbon to get my first ;-)

It didn't take you long to almost get there! ;)

Same here, but I think you will get there first. I'm entering too much of what I personally like and not enough of what the collective wants to see.

Thanks, Karen. By a weird coincidence today is exactly one year since I got my first ribbon:

I am lucky as unwittingly, I have developed a taste that happens to be popular at DPC and 500px ;) But I had to give up on PH ribbons :/

'Unwittingly' developed a DPC/500px-friendly style? Uhhhh...yeah.

How is that possible?

I can guarantee, without any reservation, that there is a 100% probability I will not make that list. :-)

I do, however, applaud the few that are on the Top 50 Ribbons AND the Top 50 Comments Given.

Lydia (who has the VERY unique honor of being #19 on both lists!!), Robert, Oliver, Karen and Judi. Please add anyone I may have missed!

KarenNfld is on both lists. She's #4 on the comments list and #12 on the ribbons list. Go Karen!

Nor should you care about making the top 50 ribbon list either Deb. I was unaware of these lists until Margaret made note of herself, but I see you are number two in commenting and to me this is MUCH more impressive than ribbons earned. And your comments are always thoughtful and not generic- thank you for that :)

Comments have had a consistent value throughout the years of DPC. But lets face it, ribbons are not the commodity they once were. All those who boast about all they ribbons they are getting today should be more humble. If many of those people who are high on the ribbon count list were still competing today, most of those who are getting ribbons now would not be. All the galleries are much smaller now than they used to be too.
And chasing ribbons is not going to make you a better photographer. It's more likely the chase will have you repeating the same tired ribbon winning formulas over and over and for some using the same plug-in presets they haphazardly discovered can impress the newbie voters.

I likely won't make the top 50 list for ribbons (was unaware I even was close until this thread) as I plan to wind down my competing here. I don't feel bad about that because it really doesn't matter. I do feel bad that I haven't commented more during my days here at DPC though. Not a total excuse, but I hunt and peck and barely have enough free time to shoot even :-/

ETA: Yes, many on the top 50 ribbon list are also high on the commenting list- bravo!

Congrats and good luck I'm looking forward, Margaret! :)

I will have to be content with having three images in the "Top 50 most viewed photos without having nekkid women in them".

Gosh, I have one in the top 50, too - very strange!

No idea.

One idea is: live in a beautiful area, find a subject that DPC voters like, develop a PP style that DPC voters like, enter a lot of challenges. :-)

Thanks for hijacking my thread. Reaching Top 50 in Comments is a very admirable achievement but you are in control of doing it yourself. Reaching Top 50 in Ribbons contains an element of uncertainty and you can only control it to some extent. This has been proven in the DPL where suddenly people who did not win many ribbons before started winning regularly. So, yes, it can be done.

I will consider it a great achievement to see myself in Top 50 Ribbons with the names I greatly admire like librodo, jjbeguin, whiteroom, ursula, gyaban, jagar. I know my photography is no match for theirs but some DPCers do enjoy my work. I am very happy about that. Thank you.

Obviously making this Top 50 Ribbons list is important to you Margaret. Whomever you displace when you get there will likely be oblivious to that fact- if they ever even knew they were on the list. So best of luck in achieving your goal if that's will make you happy :)

:) I drive up to 130km each way for some of my shots (e.g. Clifton Springs), I like luminous landscapes and toning in Photomatix. I entered 125 challenges in 18 months but I don't think that's a lot.

I am not sure why you feel so strongly about putting the importance of this list down. Aren't ribbons a big part of the DPC concept? Isn't it what made it successful in the first place and keeps it going after all these years? There are other Web sites where you can get feedback, active forums, friendly photogs. What makes DPC unique is its style of voting and the virtual ribbons. I don't know over half of the names in Top 50 as they were before my time here but I found it interesting to look at their photos even if they are oblivious of anyone looking at them. I just don't understand you POV on this.

I believe it was the self-congratulatory approach you took in starting the thread that pushed Brent's button. It's clear you have a need to be on top, similar to your activities with 500px, and frustration with 1x. Regardless, ribbons are an important part of DPC, and only a very small percent will win one. Now go get on that comment list and I'll start the thread for you.

I don't think anything I mentioned negates my point, and any or all of those ideas could apply to some others on DPC who have won many ribbons. Your landscapes and PP resonates with the majority of DPC voters, and as far as entering a lot of challenges, it's all relative - I've only entered 162 challenges in 6 years, and I obviously am not a good photographer and/or have not found subjects or a "style" that the voters like! :-D
