Biltmore House in Asheville is nice, but pricey.
Linville Falls near Boone/Blowing Rock
Dupont Forest near Brevard is cool.
If any of you like to combine mountain biking with picture taking, the possibilities are endless in Buncombe (Asheville), Transylvania (Brevard), Haywood (Waynesville), and the famous Tsali trails are about 2 hours west of Asheville.

Yup! There seem to be tons of photographic opportunities waiting for us.
Perhaps tossing around some dates will help get our more shy NC/SC folks interested in joining in. I'm gonna be out of town July 2-5 and again 15-18. What about ya'll? When are you free? |

If we go on vacation, we will go later in the Summer or in the Fall. I'm free pretty much any of the time in July, with the exception of a couple of days that I have to go to a Adult Basic Skills conference for work (but that is during the week). whenever, prolly.

As Karmat mentioned, the Biltmore House is in Asheville and it is truly beautiful. It is a bit pricey (about $35/each) to get in, but it's worth the money, especially if you have never been. That site includes the house itself, the gardens, and the winery. It can be done anytime, and the springtime (mid to late April or early May) is the best time for blooms in the gardens...

I'll actually be in Raleigh (RTP area) the 28th-30th of June, but will have essentially no time for photography. I'll be visiting friends on the evening of the 28th, on business the 29th/30th, back to Chicago to meet a customer on the 1st. No rest for the weary.

The tenth is better for me.
If we get twenty people, we can get a group discount.

A group discount? for what? Not that it matters - a discount is a discount. Or as I tell my husband, it's now how much you spent but how much you saved! Yes, he cringes at the mere sight of a photography catalog. |

Yes, setz, I saw that, too. Just pointing out. $2.25 will help buy my gas there. :-) (Plus the $2.25 my husband saves; might be able to buy a drink).
If ya'll want to get there at ten, that is fine. I'll probably meet up with you later in the day. It will take about three hours for me to get there and with my 2 1/2 year old, early mornings are not good travel times.

I'm a member already and I get in for free and stuff :)
If we decide to go here on a saturday, there isn't much of a need to get there at 10. They will have three shows in the weathering area where the birds will be out in the open. The first show will be at 11, then a 1 and then at 3. They USUALLY change up some of the birds between each show, but I have been there where they did not.
The shows usually last between 45 mins and one hour. The volunteers at the center will talk about each bird in the weathering area (they usually have at least 6 per show) and they will bring them around the railing VERY close to you. You won't have any problem with camera angles. When the birds are not being handled, they are on perches that are approximately 10' from the railing. With a 300mm lens, you can bring them up full frame for head shots on most of the larger birds.
If we get a large enough group together, it would be worthwhile to contact the center (even if we don't get 20) so we can beg them to bring out different birds for each presentation and possibly bring out a Bald Eagle. They don't bring out the Bald Eagles as often because it requires a specially trained handler to deal with that bird. If we let them know we are coming in advance, we could probably arrange to see the Bald Eagle and possibly even get some photo opportunities that we would not normally get.
Just some thoughts...

Some outtakes from a couple visits to the raptor center...

I'm up for it, but, like Karmat, I have a drive (5 hours), so I can feasibly be there by lunchtime. I'm lookin' at being there for the 1 o'clock show.

You woulnd't miss much by showing up at 1pm. You would still get a lot of great photo opportunities.
The birds that will be out in the weathering area are the only really good opportunities. The birds in caged/fenced in areas are very difficult to deal with.

John, I'm curious to know if you have been there for the PhotoWild shoots? I understand they are planning shoots for April 2nd and 9th in 2005. Sounds like a great opportunity to plan a GTG!
