I have had several people who were planning to come with me cancel today, but I still look forward to meeting everyone :)

I hope to get there by 10am. I'll have my cell phone with me (if it works in that area) and the number is:

828-234-3557

If I don't answer, leave me a message. The weather looks good for a motorcycle trip so I doubt I'll hear it ring until I get to the site...

It currently doesn't look like I'm gonna be able to make the zoo on sunday :( I have a family issue to deal with. I'm trying to get out of it tho.

Well, don't worry too much about it - I am mainly going because I am staying the night anyway.

Zoo? Sunday? I thought it was the Raptor Center on Saturday... I'm confused :-O

There are a couple of soda/water vending machines and I think there is a snack machine also. If you plan to stay all day, it may be a good idea to bring a cooler and just keep it in your car. This place is not very large and it's easy to get in and out as you need to.

As for camera gear...

I have never used anything less than my long lens for photographing the birds themselves. You are going to be able to get within 10-15 feet of these birds when they are on their perches in the weathering area. When the birds are being shown, the handler will bring them to the edge of the rail within a few feet of you. For focusing specifically on the birds, long lenses work best. You may want to bring a monopod if you have one, but I don't use that or a tripod here. A tripod is not particularly easy to work with. I use the wooden railing to steady my camera when I need it.

Finding the group when you arrive won't be difficult. When you enter the gift shop area and go into the park, the weathering area where the shows are held is very close to the park entrance. There is a trail that goes through the park where you can see all the birds in their fenced/caged areas.

One more question for John, since you've been there before... Can you advise on what we should bring? Are there concessions where H2O or snacks can be purchased? Will tripods be allowed or would monopods be better? Long lens or will we be able to get close enough to the action to make moderate zooms a better choice? I realize that each photographer will have his/her own style which will dictate equipment but I'm just looking for your opinion here. That and I'm trying to make the load as light as possible! :-D

Should we all wear a red bandana so we'll be easy to spot? LOL

Just carry a big DPC sign around! Just kidding. Looks like John plans on being at CRC around 10, so we will probably do the same. I'll just look for big, fat camera bags!

Still good to go :) I plan to be there around 10am Saturday morning. I don't think everyone will be there that early but it's not a problem. Just come when u can :)

"bump"

Just want to make sure this is still a "go" for the 10th. It's about a 5 hour drive for us, so I'd hate to get there and find out it was the wrong day, or that it has been cancelled!

I was checking in to see if we are still on for the 10th. As it turns out, my husband and I are planning to drive down Friday night, so we'll be rested Saturday morning.

So-what's the plan? Who's getting there when and where are we meeting? Is everyone just planning on hooking up at CRC?

The 10th is almost here! Who's going and what time did we decide on?
07/05/2004 10:16:45 PM · #17
I probably should be moved to a "maybe" list, if there is such a beast. I've been having some serious bouts of morning sickness (YEAH!!!!), and driving 3 hours is about more than I can handle right now. I do okay sitting still, but riding seems to make it worse. And we won't even mention how I felt out on my sister's boat today. :-/

So, if I am there, I am there. Hopefully, I'll know more by the end of the week.

I might be able to attend this, don't know for sure. I am taking care of my elderly grandmother atm. Will know sooner to the date.

BUT.... Here are some of my shots I promised from my day in Brevard NC last week, "Land of the Waterfalls". They are mostly in the Landscape folder in my new online portfolio at //www.dbh.8m.com

Also going to post this link in the Discussion Thread, hoping to get some comments on my work. I know its newbie stuff, but I quite like a few of them and would love some feedback and critique :)

Cheers

D Hughes

The late arrivals may not be able to get the group rate unless we all negotiate a same starting time...

Any thoughts?

Sorry so late to respond to this - I will be driving in from Richmond that morning, so there is no way on God's green earth I am making it by 10:00 AM :-)

But don't sweat it - I will get there when I get there, and if I have to pay a slightly higher entrance fee that will be OK. I hope to get there between 11:30 and 12:00.

Sounds like fun.

Oh yea, and John, if they actually wanted any of my shots, I would be happy to contribute to the cause. :-P

I am completely flexible on the time so put me down for whichever slot that will benefit the group :-)
