KLM sent up a plane from Amsterdam tonight. The boss of KLM was onboard, so not a wussy manager sending some pilots up to crashtest. They circled Holland and climbed all the way up to 13.000 metres. So far no problem. The sky was clear, all engines functioned normal. They are analyzing data now and checking the engines. If there is nothing extraordinary found, they might open up the skies from 8.00 in the morning CET.

I should be so lucky...

I enjoyed those, a nice mix of volcano photos and the impact on travelers and others.
Some other good photos on that photoblog page, too, including a retrospective of a retiring news photographers work.

Now to check out The Big Picture. :-)

The pictures in both of those links are awesome and really tell the story well.

The Icelanders really have that much more of an advantage for the April Free Study challenge, not that they didn't have enough subject and talent to work with before this event.

Very long night exposures with eruptions and lightning.

If all goes well you will see page 14, last post.

just received the official notice that our tomorrow's flight to Turkey is canceled... :(. not that I had much doubts, we did not even bother to pack our bags... too bad, we really looked forward to this trip... well, at least it's better to be grounded at home than elsewhere.

Most of Europe is grounded at the moment. No flights taking off or landing in many countries. This is BAD.

We have had a couple of days of the bluest sky - and to look up and not see anything other than a few buzzards circling feels kind of weird, but its also kinda nice as well.. I dont envy those stuck in airports or needing to get from A - B as a matter of import - but seeing an completely blue and empty sky is something I may never see again in the UK again...

Awesome!

WOW. I popped in to share a link at discovery.com, but the pic sites already shared make this almost an afterthought.

When will someone put a cork in it? Don't they have really big corks in Iceland? I wouldn't stay on the cork after it's installed though. ;)

That's funny I was wondering how long before we saw a northern lights volcano shot! I will be disappointed if there is not one in FS.

Yeah, that's a hot dog at the end of the stick. The volcano may be docile, but I'm not sure you want to anger the fire gods by teasing them with an offering you're only going to eat yourself. At least bring enough for everyone.

KLM Holland has send 4 cargo aeroplanes from Amsterdam this evening, with permission. Tests yesterday evening, and another 7 tests this morning did not show any sign of ash in the filters, engines and whatever the ash can hit. There is a huge push to open the European skies now.

This could be an overreaction like the Mexican flu hype.

I agree, but they were also going through a gap in the ash cloud. Something that could close up.

It will take one plane going down because this and all hell will break loose.

They are also talking about jsut flying below 20,000 feet until they clear the cloud. Difficult yes, what will all those plane being compressed into a smaller air ceiling, but doable, I think.

I think I am going to be here all week regardless. I am booked on the flight leaving Paris on Friday, if there is a flight leaving Paris on Friday.

It's not all bad news. My best friend was out here from the UK on vacation, and he was supposed to fly home today. But his flight was cancelled, so now he gets to spend an extra week here on holiday :-)

I know this event has disrupted Europe and has a chain reaction to the rest of the world, but what stunning photos! When Planet Earth and Mother Nature put on a show, they don't do things by half. Breathtaking, frightening, hypnotic, beautiful, awesome are just not adequate to describe the pent-up energy being vented. Just hope the big neighbour doesn't decide to join in.
