Hi everyone,
I just wanted to know is the voting filter really working??
I got Five Times 1 :-( on this shot
if someone can give a 1 to this image i would like to see their 7's an 8's.
Those who gave 1 should at least bother their minds to produce a comment about why they think it deserves a 1.
And all your suggestions are welcome. be honest, i m open for brickbats.. But first click on the picture to view it enlarged.

Even the ribbon winning shot's pick up one's, two's and three's . . . whether that is correct or not is open to many hours of long and torturous debate.
Nice bug though.

Some people vote harsher, or they have different criteria. I also think there are some "strategic voters" around, who think they are playing smart by low voting competing entries. To most of us a 1 says "this is worse than bad, it is awful garbage and cannot get worse. Sell your camera and take up another hobby." It happens and you have no way of knowing why. Would be nice to get some explanation for those lowball votes, but that is a rare thing. My own entry got three 1's and the red ribbon winner got two.
Yours got a 5 from me. If the blade of grass had not been in the way it probably would have been a 6. There is also some noise grain in places and some blown highlights in the corner. Minor things, and not always within your control, but they still contribute to people's opinion of the photo. Hindsight being what it is, you did extremely well with a low end camera. 5.74 is a pretty decent average, it came in above my entry.

There are a lot of folks like me who are tired of seeing bugs...and bugs eyes and may have nailed you with some low scores. I didn't vote but the image isn't all that great in terms of execution but I can tell you that the blade of grass cutting in front of the bugs face is a big big no no. That should be obvious. Other than that study your image with harsh eyes, self analyze. It's better if the criticism comes from within you.
Compare your image to Roz's which scored 6.95. The difference is clear as a bell. Look at the rich tone of her greens, for example to yours which are somewhat drab...
and note that she also got a few 1's and 2's...right?

That's exactly my point, those who vote so low as 1 should also bother themselves to explain a lil bit on that! but they don't. |

One thing that I have been doing for some time now is posting a list of anticipated critiques in my pre-challenge notes. It seems to aid in developing a critical eye for your own work, and for me it also turns the critiques into a bit of a game. Sometimes the critiques are real flaws in your image, sometimes they are just taste and personal preference. You know it's a preference thing when you receive two comments with the exact opposite opinion on the same aspect of your photo. (I love when that happens!) |

Right there's a lot of difference. I m not saying that mine was a perfect 10.
And all those people who gave a 1 to Roz's, I really feel pity for their sense.. :) |

Self analysis is important, i agree.
I love the comments too whether negative or positive.... but the point is there are no comments from the 1-givers ;-) |

I didn't vote in the challenge, but you would have received no better than a 5 from me. The blade of grass across the bug destroys the composition, there are large blown out areas, the depth of field is not good, causing the antenna to be soft, the colours are not that good and frankly, bug shots do not appeal to me, unless they are spot on.
Roz would have scored significantly higher, probably an 8, not her best insect photo either |

It's a losing battle I'm afriad, but its one that most of us have fought when we started on this site. |

Don't pity them. Understand them. They might just be cries for mercy. People begging to be shown something different. I wouldn't have given you a 1 but I can't begin to tell you how boring some subjects have become...for me, at least.
I wouldn't worry about 1's or low votes or comments to match so much. I see you received no negative comments but usually out of 5 or 6 comments you will normally get one or two that tell you the whole story...or enough to figure out why the image was voted the way it did (good or bad). You shouldn't need 8 people telling you that the blade of grass is a distraction when one person pointing it out, would be enough. Also that same comment could be applied to every image you take for the rest of your life...before you even press the shutter. Keep in mind...it doesn't always mean they're right BUT that it's how people can and will view certain things as a constant.
DPC's population, in general has it's rules, preferences, likes and dislikes. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they don't.

there will always be young idiots who will get drunk and think its funny to throw eggs at your house and cover your trees and shrubs with toilet paper, just one of those facts of life that we don't like.....
there will always be people who would will vote 1 on a shot near and dear to our hearts. Ansel Adams and Annie Liebovitz could have a love child together that was born with a 800 megapixel camera in its hand and take pictures that make angels weep and cause dogs and cats to live in harmony......these people would still vote 1 on it.
just one of those facts of life that we don't like.....

I think you got hammered by people who found your shot truly creepy. The things that are technical problems, for me add to the realism. One could easily imagine your bug chomping the leaf than then coming right at you.
When you figure out the voting here, please let me know...

Exactly that is what i meant.. Overexposure and grass blade were intentional.. May be a different title wud hav justified the presence of grass blade like " i am vegetarian these days" etc.. Anyway the verdict is out and I wud seem like a cry baby if i talk more about it :) |

Agreed. The hair is a little David St. Hubbins/Nigel Tufnel and for the record Art is way, way prettier than Liebovitz. How f***ed-up is that? |
