I bet I'd get in trouble for calling this one wild, although it totally IS:

It looks like this thread has become a post your birds side challenge. I see nothing wrong with that. It's nice to be seeing everyone's personal choice bird shots.

This would probably be DMNCd, but it is the ultimate in wild bird. This bird was captured in the great dismal swamp during bird banding.

This guy shows why shooting birds in the wild can be frustrating: I mean, look at all those nasty twigs and stuff in the way! ;-)

Hey, at least if it was a challenge this time of year there wouldn't be a ton of the dreaded hummingbird shots (probably my proudest DP moment)-

Testing out the 2X these are 300MMF2.8 with a Canon 2X making it 600MMF5.6 shot looking out my front door at my feeders in the yard.

Since everyone else is 'cheating'; here's another wild bird on a feeder. This one shot through my kitchen window with the EF 70-200 2.8 IS. This lil bugger stole all the food for the small birds 3 years in a row. After robbing it he sat and pecked on my metal eavestrough the rest of the evening (argh!!) :)

The nice thing about birds in Banff National Park is that they expect treats so they often get reeeeeally close. This was at 195 mm only because I had to stand on a picnic table to get eye level with him.

Birds aside from chickadees are a little scarce but this is a challenge I'd like to see done at some point perhaps with extended dates for submissions like we did for the Halloween challenge.

eta: I KNOW there will be zoo and reserve shots. Just make me believe that you took it in the wild and I'll be ok with it.

I really got lucky for this one. It was right outside work but I guess his hunger was stronger than his fear of civilization.
I'd like to try and catch something like this again.

Great capture, and you can be sure that hawk wasn't leaving his supper in a hurry! He's all set to fight for it.

Except for my pet parrots, all the bird shots in my portfolio are of wild birds. There are a lot of wading birds and hawks in this area, but not many eagles. It's pretty easy for me to get shots of them sitting around, but not so easy to capture on "on the fly" like this.
A lot of my bird shots are done from the driver's seat of my work truck, including both of these. Some of the roads that I work on are low traffic roads, so I can just slow down or stop in the road and shoot whatever is near the road. The locals don't even stop and ask me what I am doing any more.

Yes! Challenge Details: Photograph a wild bird in a natural environment -- no birds on leashes, perched on gloves, no zoos, no bird feeders -- just wild and natural.

This weeks topic!
Look out birds......
