my thoughts exactly, BUT I didn't dare say anything about it. I seem to be really negative recently, in life, in photography, in just about everything. SO I was double guessing myself on this, thinking I was just being negative about the whole thing.

But then again, I am being a negative person right now, so refrained from voting cos I didn't want my reflections showing up.

I'm not done yet and I am trying to up my average score as this bothers me...but this has been a very hard one to comment on and to vote on.....

I got your comment and I'm sorry to say that you didn't rave about my photo. But that's fine with me.
I like it and that's what counts.

This is all well and fine but it brings me back to my post...

Provide comments instead of just ranting about your scores. I currently have 3 comments on my photo and am slowly going through and commenting on photos. More people post how much they wish people would comment and never take the time to comment themselves. If you don't have the time to comment on all of them at least comment on the photos you score low. The people who are scoring high will have enough comments...The OP makes good points whether we agree with him or not, but in the end people will not understand how they can do better unless we comment.

I had the same experience , but we still have to move on. Cheer up!

I have had four comments so far - most probably more polite than the pic really merits (I lacked inspiration) and one telling me it is boring. Really wishing I had stuck with the first effort from the beginning of the week.

A second vote though for removing the 'close up' comment in the description. There are a stack of photos in there that are not only not macros, they struggle to be close ups, let alone extreme close ups.

I didn't vote because I am in the challenge - which is my personal policy - and I haven't commented because negative comments just seem to upset people unless you can end on something really positive and I think I might struggle with some of these. Like I said, I wasn't even terribly impressed with my own.

Roll on Contre-Jour II!

It felt so good to whine though. I have a bottled up broccoli rage. I've got to get it out of my top 5!

Whilst I agree that this challenge is not the best macro photography is not easy! I took around 50 shots and none of them were any good, and I used a macro lens. Getting a large DOF is not easy even with the lens at f22 or above. Maybe I just suck at it !

f22??? Try f32... ;o) Of course that did leave my photo a little softer than I wanted. My fault for getting a 180mm macro and using it at minimum focusing distance I supposed. Still didn't get the DOF I wanted but it did show up where I had some sensor dust so that was useful...

Amusingly when I put the 1.4 extender on it, I seem to be able to achieve f45. Click. Leave room, make coffee, do some ironing, return ... click. :o)

I think you are very much wrong with this point. You can create plenty of unique images with a wide open macro lens. Use the bokeh to your advantage.

I did ! F22 or above, just need to practise with this lens.

Yes, I agree with the OP on some of the shots. But take a closer look at some of them. Don't just give them a two second look, click 5 (or lower) and move on. Try to see what people were going for. All macros do not need a deep DOF. Sometimes a shallow DOF works. I know how the people on this site vote, and can probably guess what the top 10 will be. So, please, take a longer look and not rush to snap judgments.

I am glad you said this. After this thread was started, I got a comment about the DOF on my photo - which I disagree with. I am hoping people will read your words and open their minds about the DOF.

I did a search to see what the "proper" DOF is for a macro shot, and I cannot find anything that makes sense to me. So it would be nice if those who are critical about the DOF and macro would please post a link to something that would allow me to understand their perspective better.

Ok, so I decided I want to get some hate mails - I am starting to comment on my low scorers - wish me luck!

This is absolutely not normal. With an average vote of 3.8 and only 6 photos above 5, sorry, but I don't have time to write comments at this moment. So here is a summary for all the 148 photos below 5 and some of the 44 5's.

I have found many more above this level that are brilliant pictures...well done, with super good focus and details...

Looking at your profile, I'd say you should be able to make some constructive critics.
Hate mails?????? If people are that sensitive, and can't handle your opinion, I'd say they should take on a different sport...

I agree. At first I found a lot of the images boring, washed out, OOF and dare I say it "snap shottish" i.e. I mean grab your default lens, shove it in the face of something and crop the crap out of it to make it look enlarged like a prime lens might. I am a fan of "Macro" photography using true MACRO LENSES at ant or bug level. I know the definition of Macro is "close-up" but that could be using a 50mm lens of a teenager's face and the acne zoomed in later with PS...eeeeeuw.
I have commented on 99% of the photo's trying to find one positive comment and a negative one for those I scored 3 or 4. There were no 1's or 2's as I found at least 2 merits in each photo, albeit very slim!
Pictures of birds, amphibians, doors, etc this time got (mostly) average marks (5-6) as I found them not to be in my "spirit" of this challenge (The challenge seemed to follow on from Roz and GregoryB's winners in previous non Macro challenges)

Maybe the next time the challenge should read "....taken with a true Macro Prime 1:1 and SC will check everyone's original". If pigs could fly :) We would still get the odd water drop/frog/eagle/textured leaf/rusty key portrait take with those Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM's and Sigma 180mm f/3.5's however! If they are done really well, (like only the EYE of the frog) I promise to mark them accordingly!

I tend to agree. But the best of these are superb. Congratulations to their photogs for showing us some GREAT work. Maybe we could focus on the glass half full ... err 8% full.

Be grateful that you didn't find one titled: Window to the Sole

I would very much like to give some replies or make some comments, but had a busy weekend and now can post for 5 minutes. The rest of the week I will not be near a computer. Sorry.

Thanks for inspiring me to go vote. Lots of very good pictures. A good few that are witty, which for some of them has to make up for a bit of shortfall in the technical bit. Average 5.5xxx from me, and I'm mean.

NB, there's a bit in the challenge description about 'or an extreme close-up'. I suppose you might argue about how extreme some of the close-ups are, but that's tiresome stuff, innit?

Plenty of fascinating results that bring a little wonder out of the mundane by getting in close.

You have rated 58 of 197 images (29%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 4.9138.

I think that means I agree with the OP.
